About the Book

This volume contains the papers presented at the 6th International Conference on Environmental Problems in Coastal Regions and includes Oil and Chemical Spill Studies. The high population density in coastal areas has led to many ecological and environmental problems which require effective strategies for their management. It is important to discuss the way in which these issues interact with social and economic pressures to reach integrated solutions. Most coastal areas are subjected to an increased number of problems resulting from the growth of industrial, commercial or tourism activities. This book tries to address some of these concerns. The topics of interest include: Remote sensing and prediction; Ecology and the coastal environment; Water quality issues; Wetlands; Sediment problems; Coastal restoration; Atmospheric aspects and flooding; Computational modelling; Erosion problems; and, Management of risk.

Table of Contents:
Section 1: Ecology and the coastal environment Trace metals in soft tissues of two marine gastropod molluscs: Monodonta turbinata B. and Patella caerulea L. collected in a marine reference ecosystem; Design of blasting in a tunnel in a coastal area near a protected breeding habitat of the Shag (Phalacrocorax Aristotelis); Environmental impact of saltwater in a stratified flow system and its remedial measure; The application of ESI maps with the GIS technique to coastal oil-spill cleanups in Taiwan; Towards sustainable coastal planning and policies from a Malaysian perspective Section 2: Water quality issues Assessment of Escherichia coli viability in coastal Sicilian waters by fluorescent antibody and -glucuronidase activity methods; The use of thermophilic bacteria in accelerated hydrocarbon bioremediation; The effect and the toxicity of Iranian oil dispersant (Pars 1) on rainbow trout; Alternative loading functions in the MSB pollution flushing model; Simulating the effects of dredging on the pollutant particles originating from a wastewater treatment facility in a tidal river Section 3: Sediment problems Clean up of contaminated sediments of the Taranto harbour by stabilization/solidification treatment; Ship-wave induced sediment transport in tidal creeks; Variability of tidal current, density stratification and tidal flat sediment in a tidal river; Temporal changes in sedimentation patterns within Haboro Harbor Section 4: Erosion problems Environmental implications of the EUrosion project recommendations; Hydrodynamic forcings and environmental impacts on the coast and shelf of Sao Bento do Norte - NE/Brazil; Erosion of areas of oil and gas exploration along the coast of northeastern Brazil: the Guamare hotspot; Morphodynamic study of the Ondarreta Beach in San Sebastian (Spain) Section 5: Coastal restoration Successful rehabilitation of a sand dune system; Racing against time, an unprecedented year: the US Army Corps of Engineers (US ACE) response to the hurricanes of 2004; Tires: unstable materials for artificial reef construction; Sensitivity, exposure, and vulnerability of gravel beaches to petroleum pollution, Avalon Peninsula, Newfoundland, Canada; Low-crested offshore breakwaters: a functional tool for beach management Section 6: Computational modelling Implementation of WWIII wave model for the study of risk inundation on the coastlines of Campania, Italy; A three-dimensional model of water circulation and temperature structure in the Caspian Sea; Oil spill simulation in the Japan Sea; Simulation of oil spill behaviour and response operations in PISCES Section 7: Wetlands Managing conflicting water resources requirements in coastal wetlands: case study Pevensey Levels, UK; Effect of wrack accumulation on salt marsh vegetation, Baruch Institute, Georgetown County, South Carolina; Vegetation - soils relationships in a wetland area of the Orinoco delta plain (Venezuela) Section 8: Remote sensing and prediction Imaging spectroscopy and integrated coastal zone management: a promising marriage; Neural Network prediction of the low-frequency coastal sea level response using conventional and NECP/NCAR Reanalysis data; Geomorphological and paleogeographic characterization of continental shelf of the Apodi-Mossoro river, RN/Brazil; Satellite based oil spill and ship detection service -from national towards pan-European multi-user services; Ozone concentrations in Kostaldea in the period 2001-2004; Oil spill detection system: results from field trials October 2004; Monitoring methods of dunefield susceptible to human activities in the Nisia Floresta area, eastern coast of the State of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil; Experimental storm surge forecasting in the Bay of Bengal Section 9: Atmospheric aspects and flooding A preliminary evaluation of unexpected ozone levels measured in Falconara, Italy; Influence of geochemical and anthropogenic sources on rainwater chemical composition in two coastal sites impacted by the gas and oil industry in Campeche, Mexico; Hydrodynamic simulation for urban drainage project: case study of Niteroi Section 10: Management of risk Using the Mercator ocean forecasting system to compute coastal maritime pollution risk indicators on the Atlantic European coasts; Peculiarities of the Water Framework Directive implementation in the Canary Islands' superficial waters; Vulnerability assessment of the port and coastal infrastructure facilities of TRINMAR, on the Gulf of Paria, Trinidad, to sea level rise
