About the Book

The aim of the Fourth International Conference on Ecosystems and Sustainable Development was to integrate thermodynamics, ecology and economics into "ecodynamics", an evolutionary approach emphasising that biodiversity is at the core of sustainability. Together with its companion volume (ISBN: 1-85312-804-X), this book contains almost 120 of the contributions presented at this influential meeting. Topics covered include: ecosystems modelling; conservation and management of endangered areas; environmental management; sustainability indicators and certification; sustainable chemistry and waste management; sustainable development issues; biodiversity; economic issues; energy generation and conservation; landscapes; mathematical and system modelling; recovery of damaged areas; soil and agricultural issues; water resources; forestation; and air pollution and the greenhouse effect. This volume also features sustainability studies in the province of Siena, a special section on the SPIn-Eco Project, an ambitious research programme to assess environmental conditions using a wide set of sustainability indicators.

Table of Contents:
The recent development toward a consistent ecosystem theory. Section 1 Ecosystems modelling: Complexification of the past global changes data; Modelling recovery rules of soil microbial assemblages using matrix methods; Mapping the spatial extent of environmental health: an approach using stream turbidity; Estimation of the environmental effects of excess nitrogen caused by intensive agriculture in East Asia based on global nitrogen balance; Modeling vehicle emissions; Ecological networks, a challenge for territorial planning - the case of Region Abruzzo, Italy; A 3-D coupled physical-biological model and its application to the 1996 spring plankton bloom in Prince William Sound, Alaska; A coupled hydrodynamic and ecological model to manage water quality in Ria Formosa coastal lagoon; The North Carolina State University coastal and estuary storm surge and flood prediction system; The use of taxonomic diversity indices in the assessment of perturbed community recovery. Section 2 Conservation and management of endangered areas: Nitrogen availability and plant cover - the importance of nitrogen pools; Conserving European mountain habitats - what can their past tell us about their future?; Threatened landscapes- the presence of the past in today's planning; Aquaculture impacts on the water quality and plankton community in a mangrove ecosystem in Brazil; Trophic interactions between fish and other compartment communities in a tropical estuary in Brazil as indicator of environmental quality. Section 3 Environmental management: Tools for sustainable business management; Environment and urban growth - a Brazilian case study; The use of checklists to support spatial planning in the municipality of Graz; Factor assessment of the environmental impact for Tainan Technology Industrial Park in Taiwan; Development and application of ecosystem health indicators in the North American Great Lakes Basin; Eye-safe diode lidar for tree heights profiling and estimation of forest biomass.
