About the Book

In earthquake-prone regions of the world it is important not only to ensure that new facilities meet optimal standards but also that existing structures and infrastructure be retrofitted and rehabilitated. As world populations concentrate in urban areas, the stakes in human life and property of such natural disasters as earthquakes becomes higher and higher. This has been driving research on advances in the field. These advances are presented biennially at a conference organised by the Wessex Institute of Technology. The advances presented at the ninth conference in the series, which began in 1991 are presented in this book. The papers cover: Seismic Hazard Evaluation and Microzoning for Structural Design; Building Performance During Earthquakes; Performance Based Design; Seismic Hazard Assessment; Nonlinear Analysis; Experimental Studies; Seismic Isolation and Energy Dissipation; Case Studies.

Table of Contents:
Contents Section 1: Seismic hazard evaluation and microzoning for structural design (Special session organised by P. Clemente) What information is needed to design anti-seismic structures? Seismic input characterization for some sites in Italy; Earthquake recurrence and seismic hazard assessment: a comparative analysis over the Italian territory; Studies of seismic microzonation in Latium region (Italy) by experiencing the application of official guidelines in intra-mountain plains; Earthquake engineering needs and seismic hazard assessment; Liquefaction potential evaluation at Catania Harbour (Italy) Section 2: Building performance during earthquakes Seismic response and torsional effects of RC structure with irregular plant and variations in diaphragms, designed with Venezuelan codes; Inelastic dynamic analysis and non-linear static analysis of 6- and 17-story RC buildings of ductile frames designed in Mexico City; Seismic and structural response of a framed four level building with RC and steel structure designed according to current Venezuelan codes; Effect of infill wall and wall openings on the fundamental period of RC buildings; A study of the earthquake-resistance of masonry buildings constructed with local materials; Investigation of materials and damage sources of local masonry structures in Turkey; Influence of diaphragm flexibility on lateral load distribution between shear walls in light wood frame buildings Section 3: Performance based design Simultaneous optimization of structural shape and control system of large-scale space frame; Behaviour of unbonded post-tensioned precast concrete coupled walls under lateral loads; Optimal stiffness distribution of mid-storey-isolated buildings considering storey drift and floor acceleration response Section 4: Seismic hazard assessment Comparison of Azerbaijan and other seismic codes; Seismicity and seismotectonics of the Jeddah area, Saudi Arabia Section 5: Nonlinear numerical analysis Required bracing stiffness on lateral buckling strength for H-shaped beams with bracings; An application of the functions series method to the integration of seismic modelling Section 6: Experimental studies Historical account of monitoring the North Anatolian Fault at the Ismetpasa segment and the latest findings; The effects of measurement errors in the restoring force feedback during real-time hybrid simulations; Shear capacities for hybrid steel beams jacketed within reinforced concrete ends connected to reinforced concrete columns; Experimental validation of an algorithm for masonry vaults reinforced by the Wrap technique Section 7: Seismic isolation and energy dissipation Cable bracing design in adaptable dual control systems; Vibro-base isolation of a building to decrease the technical seismicity effect; Reducing seismic stress on buildings through inertia limiters at floor level; Semi-active control design for base isolated structures with switching damping coefficient of oil dampers; Experiences with Friction PendulumTM seismic isolation in California; Effects of using innovative seismic isolation technique on masonry: tunnelling work required Section 8: Case studies Seismic analysis of a cable stayed bridge in Talavera de la Reina, Spain; Assessment of a vulnerability model against post-earthquake damage data: the case study of the historic city centre of L'Aquila in Italy; Assessment and rehabilitation of the Volos municipal theater according to the Greek Retrofitting Code; Study of the seismic damage regularity of ancient masonry pagodas in the 2008 Wenchuan Earthquake; Flexible soils amplified the damage in the 2010 Haiti earthquake
