About the Book

You had the evidence.

You had the right answer.

The room still said no.

Every leader knows this moment.

The recommendation was sound. The analysis was clear. Yet somewhere between the presentation and the final decision, something went wrong.

Because the problem was never the evidence.

It was everything around it.

In Decision Intelligence, Nicholas Johnson explores the gap between being analytically right and being organizationally effective. Drawing on psychology, behavioral economics, organizational behavior, and decision science, Johnson reveals why good ideas lose, why evidence gets ignored, and what effective leaders do differently.

This is not a book about producing more data or building better dashboards. It is about what happens after the analysis is finished, when evidence enters a room filled with competing priorities, assumptions, personalities, politics, and uncertainty.

Readers will learn how to:

  • Recognize the hidden forces that override evidence
  • Build influence before the meeting begins
  • Communicate recommendations that people can understand and act on
  • Navigate disagreement without damaging trust
  • Turn evidence into decisions rather than simply presenting information
  • Build a culture where better decisions become the norm
  • Apply the practical CLEAR Decision Model to improve decision-making

Whether you are an executive, manager, entrepreneur, consultant, analyst, or aspiring leader, Decision Intelligence offers a practical approach to making evidence matter when it matters most.

Because having the right answer is only half the battle.

The real challenge is getting the room to act on it.

About the Author :
Nicholas Johnson is the founder and CEO of Ataviz Consulting and a strategic technology, data, AI, and operations leader who has seen firsthand what happens when the right data is in the room but the wrong decision gets made anyway. His work focuses on understanding why evidence fails to move people, and what effective leaders do differently.

Review :

"If you've ever left a meeting thinking 'the data was clear, why didn't we move?', this book is for you. Decision Intelligence shows how to frame, sequence, and translate data insight so decision makers can act with confidence instead of defaulting to ambiguity or delay."

-John Loury, President, Cause + Effect Strategy

"Decision Intelligence names something I've experienced but never had a clean framework for: the gap between having the right answer and getting a room to act on it. The One-Sentence Evidence Test is the kind of tool that changes how you prepare, not just how you present."

-Naizam Kamookagath, Senior BI & Solutions Architect

"Decision Intelligence nails the quintessential element of stakeholder buy-in. Some will spend years and thousands of dollars to miss the real-world impact you gain in this fantastically relevant book. Making this mandatory reading for all my teams."

-Steve Malley, CEO, Mood Consulting

"Decision Intelligence fills a gap I see in every data analytics classroom: students can build models, but they can't move the room. This book gives them the framework to close that gap. If your students know the methods but struggle to communicate findings to decision-makers, this book is worth assigning."

-Mehmet Serdar Kılınç, Associate Professor of Business Analytics, Le Moyne College

"Analysts are taught how to dissect data and generate methodologically sound models, but few ever grasp how to make recommendations that create action for change. Decision Intelligence bridges the gap between facts and figures and evidence for real impact."

-Pam Phojanakong, PhD, Former HHS Scientist, Federal Consultant, and Junior League of Philadelphia President

"Nicholas Johnson captures one of the defining frustrations of analytical leadership: having the right evidence, the right analysis, and the right recommendation, yet still failing to move the room. Decision Intelligence is a practical reminder that rigorous thinking is only half the work; the other half is translating evidence into the language, context, and timing decision-makers need in order to turn data into action."

-Tony Kelly, Practice Manager, Data Science

"In the NFL, reading the defense before the snap is the difference between a big play and a broken one. Just like in the business world you have to be able to read, process and execute, with precision and excellence. Johnson brings that same level of pre-snap preparation to leadership and decision making. Decision Intelligence gives you the tools to understand the room before you ever walk into it."

-Marques Ogden, CEO, Ogden Ventures LLC, NFL Veteran
