About the Book

You spend decades building something. Then one day, it goes on without you.

P. Scott Bening was the CEO of the science-driven company that enabled one of the most recognizable consumer products in the world, Tide Pods. When he retired from that role, he found himself asking a question many ambitious professionals spend their entire careers avoiding: What now?

In The Back Nine, Scott shares the unvarnished truth about what comes next: the grief no one warns you about, the mentorship that gives retirement its meaning, the fairness battles that follow you off the field, and the social shifts that make the world feel both unrecognizable and full of possibility.

With the candor of a seasoned leader and the warmth of someone who's been exactly where you are, this book is for anyone who refuses to believe the best rounds are behind them.

About the Author :
P. Scott Bening is an entrepreneur, retired CEO, and author whose career spans more than four decades at the crossroads of science and business. After thirty-three years leading the company that made Tide Pods a reality, Scott now serves as an executive advisor, board member, and mentor to emerging leaders. With degrees from St. Lawrence University and the University of Illinois at Chicago, his honors include sixteen U.S. patents, induction into the Chicagoland Entrepreneurship Hall of Fame, a fellowship in Indiana's Society of Innovators, and a commendation from the 111th United States Congress. His first book, Formulating Solutions, became an Amazon bestseller.

Review :

"Through work at Butler University Board, I've come to know Scott as a thoughtful, steady leader who approaches complex challenges with perspective and good judgment. The Back Nine reflects that same sensibility-an honest, engaging reflection on purpose, relevance, and contribution beyond formal leadership roles. It's a meaningful read for anyone thinking seriously about what comes next."

- James Danko, President, Butler University

"With candor, insight, and clarity, The Back Nine explores through a personal journey what it truly means to step away from the professional grind, finding new purpose that eases the transition from executive leadership to a fulfilling retirement. It is recommended reading for leaders and professionals seeking to remain active, relevant, and useful in the next chapter of life, with success measured in new dimensions."

- Jose Vega, Owner, JVega Solutions, and Professor of Engineering, University of Arkansas

"Scott inspires through his dedication to supporting others. His life course illustrates resilience, making this book a must-read for all ages on navigating relationships and overcoming life's transitions."

- Noel Faict, Founder & Independent Consultant at Noel & Partners

"The Back Nine takes us further and deeper on the journey P. Scott Bening started with Formulating Solutions-this time focused not on building a company, but on what comes after. With stories, meditations, and guidance, he charts a wise path for transforming hard-earned experience into renewed purpose, relevance, and contribution in a changing world. Scott's reflection and transparency is rare, invaluable, and perfectly timed for this moment."

- Liam Berryman, CEO of Nelumbo, a Kuraray Company

"The leaders I admire most never stop showing up. They are hungry to serve. If you want to matter beyond your title, read this book now."

- Dr. Michael Hole, Physician, Professor, United States Air Force officer, Executive Vice President and Provost, Butler University
