About the Book

Grandpa's Store is a review of some of the author's childhood. Most of his childhood was spent around his Grandpa Hinkle's country store located on Milo in Tomahawk, Kentucky. Back in that day the area was known as Stidham, Kentucky. Grandpa John Crit and Grandma Ina Hinkle ran the store and also the stidham post office for many years. The store was a family and community gathering place. Gasoline, feed for cattle, groceries and snacks were mostly the items distributed from the little store. There were nine children born to his grandparents, plus they raised a grandson whose name was James Edward Webb. The book refers to many of the relatives on occasions as well as James E. who was only ten years older than the author and became his school teacher, guitar mentor, basketball coach and childhood friend. The book has a lot of simple stories that relate family life and crazy Appalachian episodes. This book will help you to turn back the clock a few years as you may see yourself in some of the stories.

A lot of good memories

  • A lot of good memories here. My Dadaw Hinkle ran this Store and Stidham Post Office which closed around 1955. He opened each morning around 6:15 and made sandwich's for men going to work. Kids going to school would gather in there to stay warm while waiting on the bus. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in what life was like growing up in 50s and 60s.

  • I enjoyed reading this book written by Dr. Glenn Mollette. It brought back a lot of good memories of growing up in the 50's and 60's in Dadaw Hinkle's Stidham, Ky. store. The Post Office was discontinued in 1955 when he retired. You could purchase just about anything here from shoes to grocery mix candy. Texaco Gas was around .30 per gal. Kids would gather here each morning to catch the bus to Inez and Tomahawk School. Grandpa's Store occupies a special place in my treasured memories. Highly recommended reading!

  • I didn't grow up in Appalachia, but I certainly felt a connection to the young boy in the stories. There were so many things I could relate with.
  • I started reading the book in the morning and kept reading until I finished that night.
  • If you grew up in the country, in a small town or just have an interest in this type of living, I'm sure you would find things you too could identify with.
  • Dr. Glen Mollette can give you a glimpse of what life is/was like in Appalachia.
