About the Book

Where Did This Stone Come From? reveals the story behind the stone walls of the Mesa Verde National Park Visitor and Research Center.

Visitors often stand before the building and ask a simple question: Where did this stone come from? This book answers that question by following the journey of the sandstone from the Dry Creek Basin of southwest Colorado to its final place within one of America's most remarkable national parks.

Through photographs, behind-the-scenes details, and firsthand experience from the people who quarried, shaped, and supplied the stone, readers gain a rare look into the craft and labor behind the project. The story explores quarry operations, stone fabrication, transportation, and the careful installation that transformed raw material into lasting architecture.

Set within the landscapes of the Four Corners region, the book also reflects on the deeper connection between land, craftsmanship, and history. In a place like Mesa Verde-where ancient stone dwellings have endured for centuries-modern construction carries a responsibility to respect the environment and the cultural legacy of the region.

Part history, part craftsmanship story, and part visual record, Where Did This Stone Come From? honors the workers, the land, and the tradition of building with stone that belongs to the landscape.
