About the Book

The Mike Chisholm Saga follows defense attorney Mike Chisholm as he returns to the small Southern town of Fayetteville, North Carolina, seeking a quieter life and a second chance at purpose. Instead, he's drawn into a high-stakes murder case that exposes the fault lines of race, class, memory, and justice in a tightly knit community where everyone thinks they already know the truth.

His fragile peace collapses when Ruth Watson, a hardworking single mother, calls him late one night. Her teenage son, Jamal, has been arrested for the murder of Mr. Patel, a beloved convenience store clerk, during what police say was an attempted robbery at Miller's Quick Mart. Ruth is sure of her son's innocence and begs Mike to help.

Mike walks the crime scene over and over. He notes a malfunctioning security camera, blind spots in the aisles, a cluttered stockroom with a possible escape route, a dark alley, and a broken back door. He studies inconsistent police logs and chain-of-custody errors involving key evidence, such as a black hoodie found nearby-witness statements conflict on who ran where, what they wore, and when the police arrived. Much of the state's case, he realizes, rests on circumstantial evidence, a panicked partial statement from Jamal taken without counsel, and the town's willingness to see a Black teen as dangerous.

As he digs, Mike feels Fayetteville's mood turn against him. Supporting Jamal puts him at odds with parts of the community that want a quick conviction. The Watsons are shunned at church and the diner; Mike receives anonymous threats and social pushback. The trial becomes a lightning rod for long-standing prejudices, fears about crime, and resentments toward "outsiders" who won't accept the town's assumptions.

Recognizing he needs local insight and credibility, Mike reaches out to Carol Lester, a respected attorney who once prosecuted cases and now defends. Initially skeptical of joining a politically dangerous murder defense, Carol agrees after hearing the gaps in the state's case and sensing Mike's sincerity. They form a partnership: Mike drives the forensic and procedural strategy, while Carol reads the jury pool, interprets local loyalties, and grounds their work in Fayetteville's social realities.

Together, they construct a defense centered on three themes: Jamal's humanity and history, the unreliability of key evidence, and the danger of rushing to judgment in a case charged with emotion and bias. They interview teachers who describe Jamal as thoughtful and responsible, employers who call him reliable, and friends who admit he sometimes fell in with the wrong crowd but never sought violence.

Jury deliberations are long and fraught. Jurors wrestle with fear of crime, empathy for both families, uncertainty about forensics, and awareness of racial dynamics. The votes swing back and forth before slowly coalescing around a key insight: there is too much that cannot be known with certainty. In the end, they return a not-guilty verdict.

The aftermath occupies the final portion of the book. Jamal walks free, but life is not simply restored. The Watsons experience relief, gratitude, and lingering stigma. Some in town applaud the verdict; others insist "he just got away with it." The victim's family grieves, feeling that no verdict could truly deliver justice for their loss.
