Initially skeptical of joining a politically dangerous murder defense, Carol agrees after hearing the gaps in the state's case and sensing Mike's sincerity. They form a partnership: Mike drives the forensic and procedural strategy, while Carol reads the jury pool, interprets local loyalties, and grounds their work in Fayetteville's social realities.
Together, they construct a defense centered on three themes: Jamal's humanity and history, the unreliability of key evidence, and the danger of rushing to judgment in a case charged with emotion and bias. They interview teachers who describe Jamal as thoughtful and responsible, employers who call him reliable, and friends who admit he sometimes fell in with the wrong crowd but never sought violence.
