About the Book

Brotherhood & Battle-Stories of Courage and Survival Aboard a Destroyer In this compelling and vivid account, Robert Scigliano takes readers aboard the USS Harry E. Hubbard during one of the most pivotal and perilous moments of World War II-the Battle of Okinawa. Drawing from his own experiences and the recollections of his shipmates, Scigliano paints a richly detailed portrait of life on a destroyer under combat conditions. Scigliano examines the harrowing reality of warfare at sea. He delves into the perspectives of those who faced kamikaze attacks, engaged with an unrelenting enemy, and grappled with the moral and emotional implications of war-culminating in their response to the atomic bomb and the dawn of the Cold War. Shipboard Life Under Combat offers an unfiltered glimpse into the courage, camaraderie, and coming-of-age of the young men who served aboard the Hubbard. Beyond combat, the book reflects on life in peacetime, capturing the profound transformation of a generation shaped by war. Meticulously researched and deeply personal, this posthumous work by Robert Scigliano-completed and published by his sons, Eric and Brian Scigliano-is a must-read for anyone seeking to understand the human side of history's most monumental conflicts.
