About the Book

Set in a serene suburban locale, The Worn-Out Flag is a captivating picture book that introduces young readers to the tale of a Marine reservist's son. With vivid, realistic illustrations that evoke Americana nostalgia, this book transports readers into a world where respect, patriotism, and understanding flow generously. A somber yet beautiful journey unfolds when Miguel and Sam learn the symbolic meaning behind the flag's stars, stripes, and colors and hear Miguel's father's inspirational journey from a Scout to a Marine. The story teaches readers about dignity, respect, and the depth of sacrifice symbolized by the flag. Intended for children ages 4-8 and their families, The Worn-Out Flag aims to educate about the significance of our flag and instill a sense of unity and respect for service members among military and non-military communities.

Review :
Keith Mbuya, for Readers' Favorite, writes: "Karen Bowen's The Worn-Out Flag is just what you should be looking for if you love children's educational picture books. With an interesting plot, Karen ingeniously teaches kids almost everything they need to know about the American flag, briefly diving into its history and significance. The colorful images complement the text, making it easy to follow and understand the story. Karen's thoughtful choice of words will enrich your child's vocabulary and enlighten them on important aspects of the nation's political and military history." Philip Van Heusen, for Readers' Favorite, writes: "Finally, a children's picture book that I absolutely loved!" and "This children's picture book is not just a story but a treasure chest of information about the flag, its history, and proper care. Karen Bowen's writing enlightens and informs so well that this book is a must-read for every young American. The writing will keep your child's attention. I cannot recommend this book highly enough! I believe every K-3 grade student in the USA should have this book read to them every year." Marie-Helene Fasquel, for Readers Favorite, writes: "The Worn-Out Flag by Karen Bowen is a captivating children's book with different interwoven themes, focusing on the American flag and why young (and not-so-young) Americans should respect it." and "This story will also help parents (or teachers) teach about the fifty states, the thirteen colonies, and the unity of the states. But, it is far from being the only theme dealt with. It is also about friendship, patriotism, traditions, respect, family bonds, valor, courage, and selflessness." "This delightful story and its timeless message will resonate with children and parents alike." Louise Sattler, Blogger for Book Recommendations for Tots To Teens, writes: "This book surprised me! I thought it would be preachy and not too interesting for a child to follow. I was wrong. It was respectful and had a great lesson to teach. Plus, it was very inclusive. Karen Bowen did a great job with this book and it is one cross-generations can enjoy together. We need more writers like Bowen, who tackle heartfelt topics and give important information at the same time!" Kristal Leon, a former blogger for A Sailor's Wife Blog, writes: "I absolutely loved the book. It really touched my heart that this book was made to teach children the proper way to care for our flag. It is something so important to military families, and I appreciate that you wrote a book about it. My son loved the book and said, "Look, it's daddy and me." I love that my son is able to see himself in the book. What a great thing for me to see as a military spouse and mom."
