About the Book

All of Ava's classmates seem to excel at many things... especially cartwheels! Ava is not so good at cartwheels, and after many attempts - and just as many tumbles - she feels sad. But with a little encouragement from her mom, Ava makes an exciting discovery. Though she may be unable to do some things, she has countless other talents. And they should all be celebrated! But What Can You Do? is a charming, relatable story with an important message about perseverance, self-awareness, and positive self-talk. Ava + Mommy Publishing writes children's books focused on Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) to teach kids with big feelings, in Pre-K through 3rd grade, key tools like positive self-talk, perseverance, and self-awareness to solve problems. We are rooted in encouraging parents, caregivers, and education professionals to teach kids how to celebrate their small wins while embracing a growth mindset to help them accomplish their future goals. We hope that when kids read an Ava + Mommy book, like But What Can You Do?, they'll be reminded of all the tools they already have and be inspired to learn more tools to help them grow emotionally.

Review :
But What Can You Do? is a beautiful story that outlines the life of a regular little girl who struggles with a task. With support and encouragement, she realizes what is most important.... the things that CAN be done already. It is a beautiful story for parents to share with their children and a beautiful story for parents to remember, we don't have to step in to save our kids, we just need to show them how to save themselves. S.B. Parent and MSW, LCSW But What Can You Do? is a must-read for young minds. As a Licensed Professional Counselor, I am impressed by how it beautifully illustrates the importance of determination and recognizing one's abilities. This book is perfect for teaching children about self-acceptance and resilience. The language is child-friendly, and the vibrant illustrations complement the empowering message. But What Can You Do? is an excellent tool for parents and educators to discuss perseverance and self-worth with children. It encourages them to embrace their individuality and strengths. I highly recommend it for its positive impact and uplifting narrative. Dr. Courtney M. Graves EdP, LPC What a beautiful and affirming story! But What Can You Do? gives good advice to all when struggling with a new skill or task; take a pause, remind yourself of all the things you can do, and, with effort and practice, other things will become possible. This story could be used in a variety of ways in a classroom setting. It creates the opportunity for children and teachers to share things they are already capable of doing and things they are working on...normalizing the fact that all have challenges, and the challenges vary. It also gives the space for reflection on what one can already do...affirming all skills and tasks - small and large! How Arika guided her daughter, Ava's ideas in this book is caring and respectful. Both voices are heard. Heidi Kehle Early Childhood Specialist But What Can You Do? is a well-crafted text that promotes children's self-efficacy, positive self-image, belief in one's ability, and heightened sense of their worth and value. This book has a great ability to be embedded within classroom lessons, counseling groups, and family interaction time. Students will walk away with an increased sense of who they are socially, emotionally, and mentally. This book is a great addition to helping to encourage child well-being and esteem. Dr. L.A. Smith Author, Educator, Professor The new book, But What Can You Do? by Arika Parr and Ava Johnson is a winner. It is a wonderful exploration of the perennial problem of kids wanting to give up in the face of failure. The illustrations and rhyming text are approachable for even the younger students. This book is not only a fun read, but a great jumping-off point for rich discussions about grit and perseverance. Joe Corbett, Librarian New City School
