About the Book

What happens when humanity weaves its ancient longing for the divine into the circuits of artificial intelligence? Discover a playful, philosophical journey where omniscience, omnipotence, and the digital age collide. Is ChatGPT the new god of our times? With wit and philosophical verve, Gabrielle Halpern explores how our collective imagination projects the sacred onto machines-- algorithms become omnipresent, data-driven omniscience replaces prophecy, and the prompt becomes a modern prayer. In this hybrid essay, playful digressions meet existential questions, mixing humor and rigor to illuminate our uneasy relationship with technology.

About the Author :
Gabrielle Halpern holds a PhD in philosophy and graduated from the prestigious É cole Normale SupÉ rieure in Paris. She has worked in several French government ministries, co-led a startup incubator, and now advises companies and public institutions. She is the author of several books. In 2024, the French magazines ELLE and La Tribune named her one of the " 30 Women Transforming the Economy and Society."

Review :

"Gabrielle Halpern offers an analysis of our relationship with AI that is as surprising as it is insightful, giving us plenty to think about--and even to meditate on." -- La Tribune

"In her essay Artificial Intelligence: And Man Created God, the author draws on a host of philosophers--including Kant, Anders, Popper, and many others--to examine our use of AI, what we project onto technology, and how it is reshaping our relationship with our own humanity." -- L'Opinion

"This essay is fascinating because it invites us to reflect on the ways these machines are transforming our everyday lives." -- La Règle du jeu

"Philosopher and theology specialist Gabrielle Halpern has published a provocatively titled book, Artificial Intelligence: And Man Created God, which humorously invites readers to rethink the ways we use AI while examining our relationship with the divine." -- Actu J

"For philosopher Gabrielle Halpern, 'It is not so much our humanity that AI seeks to imitate, but rather omniscience, omnipotence, and omnipresence--the defining attributes of the divine.'" -- Le Dauphiné Libéré

"What if artificial intelligence has become our new object of belief? In Artificial Intelligence: And Man Created God, published by Éditions Hermann on January 14, philosopher Gabrielle Halpern of the École Normale Supérieure de Lyon compares AI to a modern-day deity. She explores our desire for instant answers, tailor-made solutions, and frictionless relationships. The result is a philosophical--sometimes ironic--reflection on what our use of AI reveals about our relationship with the world, with others, and with ourselves." -- L'Ours
