Durch seine vielseitige Begabung war William Morris (1834-1896) eine der emblematischsten Persönlichkeiten des neunzehnten Jahrhunderts. Als Maler, Architekt, Dichter, Kunstgewerbler, Drucker und Ingenieur, der sowohl den Federkiel als auch den Pinsel meisterte, brüskierte er die viktorianische Gesellschaft, indem er die von der triumphierenden Industrie etablierten Standards über Bord warf. Sein Engagement für die Abfassung des sozialistischen Manifests war die logische Folge der Revolution, die er in seinem Lebensstil, in der Form seines Designs und in den von ihm verwendeten Farben verkörperte. Seine Zugehörigkeit zu den Präraffaeliten, seine Tapeten- und Stoffentwürfe und seine idealistischen Utopien sind gleichermaßen Ausdruck seines Genies. Als Vorläufer der Designer des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts war er zusammen mit John Ruskin Mitbegründer der Arts and Crafts-Bewegung. Als unabhängiger Künstler ebnete William Morris den Weg zum Jugendstil und später zum Bauhaus. Anhand seines meisterhaften schriftlichen und visuellen Werks entschlüsselt Arthur Clutton-Brock in seinem Meisterwerk das enge Verhältnis zwischen Idealen und Kreation sowie zwischen Evolution und Revolution.

Arthur Clutton-Brock, Essayist, Journalist und Kritiker, schrieb zahlreiche Werke über Architektur, Religion, Kunst und Literatur und ist von der Vielfalt seiner Interessen her geistesverwandt mit William Morris, dem er sich sehr verbunden fühlte. Zu seinen Arbeiten gehören eine Geschichte der Kathedrale von York, eine Abhandlung über Religion (The Ultimate Belief) sowie literarische Essays, etwa zu Shakespeare's Hamlet. Viele seiner Essays wurden im Times Literary Supplement veröffentlicht. Sein Hauptaugenmerk richtete er stets auf die Stellung des Künstlers innerhalb der Gesellschaft. Clutton-Brock gilt als ein hervorragender Kenner von Morris, was, wie bereits erwähnt, nicht zuletzt auf seinen Eklektizismus zurückzuführen ist, den er mit Morris teilt.
