À l’époque où l’expressionnisme abstrait, mode de peinture alors dominant, mettait l’accent sur l’expression dramatique à travers des coups de pinceaux audacieux et de larges compositions abstraites, les peintures du drapeau américain, des cibles, des nombres ou de l’alphabet réalisées par Jasper Johns apparurent comme une rupture radicale. Froids, silencieux et impassibles, ses sujets, soigneusement établis, étaient en effet bien loin des explosions émotionnelles alors en vogue. « Tout a commencé… avec mon tableau d’un drapeau américain. Mon choix de ce sujet fut stratégique, car je n’avais précisément pas à l’imaginer. C’est alors que je me suis focalisé sur ce genre de choses, comme les cibles par exemple, des choses familières. Cela m’a permis de concentrer ma réflexion sur d’autres niveaux. Par exemple, j’ai toujours pensé une peinture comme étant une surface, la peindre en une seule couleur rendait cela évident. Puis, j’ai décidé que regarder une peinture ne devait pas nécessiter une concentration spéciale comme, par exemple, assister à une messe. On devrait pouvoir regarder une peinture comme on regarde un radiateur. » Contrairement à la plupart des déclarations des artistes des années 1950, on ne retrouvait pas dans le discours de Johns les doutes et l’angoisse habituels, et sa sélection de thèmes avait l’air délibéré, sans désirs, ni liens affectifs. Cependant, aux yeux des artistes plus jeunes, après les excès de l’expressionnisme abstrait, son art était plus honnête, plus lucide que froid et dénué de sentiments. En choisissant des sujets facilement reconnaissables, Johns semblait rejeter la peinture abstraite. Cependant, les sujets eux-mêmes possédaient une caractéristique vitale de l’abstraction classique, leur planéité, les rendant indiscernables de la surface de la toile. Ce livre souligne comment le travail de Jasper Johns rendit obsolète la polarité entre l’abstraction et la représentation qui domina les débats de l’art moderne pendant des dizaines d’années, et comment son Œuvre ouvrit de nouvelles perspectives sur les relations de l’art et du monde. Cette analyse tente aussi de comprendre pourquoi, depuis sa première exposition à la Galerie Léo Castelli, à vingt-sept ans, il reste un des artistes majeurs de la scène artistique contemporaine.

About the Author :
Historienne de l'art, Catherine Craft est spécialisée dans l'art moderne et contemporain. Elle a obtenu son doctorat à l'université du Texas d'Austin avec une thèse sur le milieu de l'art à New York entre 1951 et 1965. Elle travaille actuellement sur un livre intitulé An Audience of Artists: Dada, Neo-Dada, and the Emergence of Abstract Expressionism, 1945-1953 et a déjà publié de nombreux articles sur des artistes contemporains tels que Rauschenberg, Johns et Pollock pour des magazines comme The Burlington Magazine. Elle a également donné plusieurs conférences dans de prestigieux musées, tels que le Museum of Modern Art, le Metropolitan Museum of Art et la National Portrait Gallery de Washington, D.C. Elle habite désormais entre le Texas et l'Allemagne où elle travaille en tant que chercheuse indépendante.
