About the Book

In a world increasingly dependent upon technology for information and procedures, a longing for human persons-once ubiquitous, now often hidden behind screens-grows deeper and more urgent with each passing day. This book argues that it is only through persons that we can approach truth, which transcends what can be computed in rational analysis. Drawing upon science, sacred scripture, philosophy and literature, it shows us how the hunger for such truth in our troubled world can be fed by Christ, the Bread of Life, the Truth in Person. Speaking to the growing truth-instinct of the young, it deconstructs the algorithmic view of creation in order to kneel before this Truth, witnessing to its emergence in personal dialogue among all persons, in nature seen poetically as a mother and above all in the truthful life fostered by friendship and fraternity, which culminates in sharing the blissful knowing and loving of the persons of the Holy Trinity.

About the Author :
LUKE BELL O.S.B. is a monk of Quarr Abbey on the Isle of Wight in the United Kingdom, a Benedictine monastery of the Solesmes Congregation. His work there includes mentoring the young who come to the abbey to follow its internship program. He is a graduate in English literature of King's College, Cambridge and the author of eight other books on spiritual themes. He is specially interested in the intersection of Christian tradition and contemporary thought.

Review :
Praise for the work of Luke Bell"To read Luke Bell's The Meaning of Blue is to see with new eyes, to love the world afresh. This very Benedictine book, written by a monk, with its roots sunk in prayer, liturgy, poetry, and the sacraments, aims at nothing less than transformation of the self, so that we encounter life as it really is, bright with the splendor of God. An invaluable guide to the spiritual life, by one who knows whereof he speaks." --PHILIP ZALESKI, editor of The Best Spiritual Writing series and co-author of Prayer: A History "The Mystery of Identity calls us on a journey to the innermost self, offering great poets and philosophers of Christendom and the Islamic world as our guides. This is a book for anyone interested in knowing who they really are." --THOMAS PLANT, author of The Lost Way to the Good "The Mystery of Identity is a Christian study of identity, but one that crosses the boundaries of all shades of religious belief and unbelief. Fr Bell examines the most prevalent identity crises today, reconnecting them with God by means of events in the Gospels. He elucidates these crises in the light of the classic literature of the West, from Shakespeare to Dostoevsky, showing from this side also that the resolution of all conflicts-whether deeply existential or psychologically weaponized as in the case of identity politics-is to be found in the Gospels." --ROBERT BOLTON, author of Person, Soul and Identity
