About the Book

A child-centered guide that explains autism and highlights the gifts of being neurodivergent! Using simple language, complemented by appealing and captivating illustrations, Different Thinkers Autism offers an accessible and uplifting message about what it means to have autism, how autism affects emotions and behaviors, and what children can do to manage any challenges while building on their individual strengths. Written for elementary-age youth, parents, educators, and clinicians, the book features three vignettes of children who are autistic. Each vignette highlights various aspects of autism and how these can shape a child's behaviors and relationships at home and in school. Thought-provoking prompts are included throughout the text to help young readers better understand an autism diagnosis, explore what it means to be a different thinker, and find empowerment and self-acceptance. Different Thinkers Autism gives young children information and strategies that can help them flourish while reminding them that their strengths, interests, and abilities are what define them. This is the second title in the Different Thinkers series, written to help kids understand their brains and the unique vulnerabilities and opportunities that come with being neurodivergent.

Review :
"Easy to read and with attractive graphics, this book is an excellent resource for understanding neurodiversity in children. Autistic children, as well as their family and friends, will find that the book conveys practical information of relevance to daily life." Chandan Vaidya, PhD Professor and Vice Provost for Faculty, Department of Psychology, Georgetown University "The book is great. It's an excellent introduction to autism for parents and kids. I love that the book explains to kids that autism is not something they suddenly have, but that it's a word for how their brain works. I know my child could identify with different aspects of the three kids in the book. Seeing himself in these kids starts a conversation, and the prompts within the book provide a framework for exploring my child's strengths and needs." Parent of a 9-year-old autistic child "This beautifully illustrated book helps to explain to ASD level 1 and 2 children (as well as their parents and teachers) the meaning of being neurodiverse and that their set of abilities may provide special talents, as well as opportunities to learn socially based information that may not come to them as easily." Michelle Garcia Winner, MA, CCC-SLP CEO and Founder of Social Thinking Methodology "This book is a valuable and original way for autistic children to learn about their gifts and challenges. The authors have produced a beautiful book for parents and others to enjoy reading with an autistic child, to celebrate their differences." Professor Sir Simon Baron-Cohen, FBA, FMedSci, FRSM Fellow, Trinity College, Cambridge, Director of the Autism Research Centre
