About the Book

For years after Cari Farver vanished, her name kept sending messages.

In November 2012, thirty seven year old computer programmer Cari Farver disappeared from Omaha, Nebraska, after spending the night with David Kroupa. Her Ford Explorer resurfaced. Her phone remained active. Her family received disturbing texts, her employer received a resignation, and David became the target of a relentless cyberstalking campaign.

Every message suggested that Cari was alive. Nobody heard her voice or saw her again.

Cari's mother, Nancy Raney, and her son, Max, recognized the impersonation immediately. The woman described in the messages had abandoned her child, ignored a family wedding, missed her father's funeral, and discarded the life she had spent years building. None of it resembled the Cari they knew.

Authorities initially treated the case as the voluntary disappearance of an adult woman with bipolar disorder. Meanwhile, the person controlling Cari's identity created dozens of online accounts and used approximately thirty telephone numbers. Threatening messages arrived for years. Property was vandalized, homes were set on fire, and innocent people were framed for crimes they had never committed.

Behind the digital identities was Shanna "Liz" Golyar, another woman who had dated David Kroupa.

Often described as a deadly love triangle, the Cari Farver case became one of the most complex stories of digital impersonation, obsessive jealousy, catfishing, identity theft, and online stalking ever presented in an American courtroom. Golyar maintained an enormous network of false personalities while presenting herself as another victim of the harassment.

When cold case investigators reopened Cari's file, deleted photographs and network records began exposing the architecture of the deception. A fingerprint linked Golyar to Cari's property. Blood discovered beneath the seat covering of the recovered Explorer provided physical evidence of murder. Images recovered from a hidden memory card revealed knowledge that only Cari's killer could possess.

Without Cari's body or a recovered murder weapon, prosecutors constructed a powerful no body homicide case from digital forensics, DNA evidence, surveillance records, false confessions, and years of communications. Golyar was ultimately convicted of first degree murder and second degree arson.

FATAL OBSESSION: THE DISTURBING CASE OF CARI FARVER reconstructs the complete chronology of the disappearance, the impersonation campaign, the cold case investigation, and the murder trial. This new expanded edition examines the evidence in greater depth while following the devastating consequences for Cari's family and everyone drawn into Golyar's manufactured reality.

The book explores how digital communication can imitate proof of life, how assumptions about mental illness can distort a missing person investigation, and how one stolen identity sustained years of psychological terror. It also examines the criminal psychology of obsession and the forensic methods that finally separated Cari Farver from the person writing in her name.

Written for readers of investigative true crime, criminal psychology, missing person cases, female killers, cybercrime, internet stalking, solved cold cases, and courtroom investigations, Fatal Obsession presents the Cari Farver murder case with a detailed narrative grounded in the complete sequence of events.

At the center remains Cari herself: a mother and computer programmer whose life was reduced to messages written by her killer, and whose family refused to accept the lie that she had willingly disappeared.
