About the Book

Medically termed as a cerebrovascular accident (CVA), a stroke is a sudden and possibly fatal disorder caused by a cutoff in blood flow to an area of the brain. Brain injury and other neurological problems may arise from this disruption in blood flow. Two major categories of strokes exist: - Ischemic strokes account for about 85% of all strokes and are therefore the most common form. The brain's blood supply is cut off when a clot or plaque builds up in an artery. Because of this, healthy brain tissue around the afflicted area is deprived of oxygen and dies. - When a blood artery in the brain bursts, it bleeds (hemorrhages) into the brain tissue around it, causing a stroke. Two subtypes of hemorrhagic stroke have been identified. - When a blood vessel in the brain bursts, blood collects in the brain tissue, a condition known as intracerebral hemorrhage. - Bleeding into the subarachnoid space, between the brain and the arachnoid membrane, is called a subarachnoid hemorrhage. Stroke symptoms include sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding speech, sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes, sudden severe headache, difficulty walking, dizziness, loss of balance, or lack of coordination, and numbness or weakness in the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body. When someone is suspected of suffering a stroke, getting them medical assistance quickly is vital to reducing brain damage and increasing their chances of recovery. Ischemic strokes can be treated with anti-clotting drugs, while hemorrhagic strokes may require surgical repair of blood vessel damage followed by rehabilitation to assist the patient restore lost abilities. Stroke prevention techniques include controlling known risk factors including hypertension, diabetes, and smoking, and living a generally healthy life with frequent exercise, a good diet, and moderate alcohol consumption. Getting checkups on a regular basis and treating any underlying health issues right away will greatly lower the likelihood of having a stroke.
