ACE's hersenwetenschap is een snel evoluerend veld, het komt zelden voor dat we een paar stappen terug doen om de omvang van het terrein te zien, proberen te begrijpen wat onze studies voor ons leven betekenen, op een eenvoudige en directe manier bespreken wat het betekent om te zijn een biologisch wezen. Dit boek beoogt precies dat te doen. Hersenwetenschap is belangrijk. Het vreemde rekenweefsel in onze schedels is de perceptuele motor waarmee we de wereld rondreizen, het materiaal waaruit beslissingen voortkomen, het materiaal waaruit verbeeldingskracht wordt gesmeed. Onze dromen en ons wakkere leven komen voort uit zijn miljarden snel rijdende cellen. Een beter begrip van de hersenen werpt licht op wat we als echt beschouwen in onze persoonlijke relaties en wat we weten dat nodig is in sociaal beleid: hoe we vechten, waarom we liefhebben, wat we als waar accepteren, hoe we moeten opvoeden, hoe we beter sociaal beleid en hoe we ons lichaam voor de komende eeuwen kunnen ontwerpen. In de microscopisch kleine circuits van de hersenen worden de geschiedenis en toekomst van onze soort vastgelegd. Gezien de centrale rol van het brein in het leven, vroeg ik me af waarom de samenleving zo weinig over het onderwerp heeft, in plaats daarvan praat ik liever over roddels over beroemdheden en realityshows. Maar nu geloof ik dat dit gebrek aan aandacht voor de hersenen niet als een defect kan worden beschouwd, maar als een aanwijzing: we zitten zo vast in de realiteit, dat het heel moeilijk is om te beseffen dat we ergens in vastzitten. Op het eerste gezicht lijkt er niets om over te praten. Natuurlijk zijn er kleuren in de wereld. Natuurlijk lijkt mijn geheugen op een videocamera. Natuurlijk ken ik de echte redenen om te geloven wat ik geloof.
