About the Book

Second Impressions comprises three stories of the coming of age of three successive generations of young women, spanning the Victorian era. All three stories are told in the first person, presenting the personal journeys of each of the protagonists in turn and addressing the tensions they face in seeking to challenge the conventional roles of women. A homage to Jane Austen, the novel is a sequel to her last completed work, 'Persuasion'. These are passionate love stories, set against the backdrop of the industrial revolution and the sweeping social, political and intellectual upheavals it engendered. Part 1, 'Of a different Persuasion', contains echoes of Jane Austen, which aficionados will recognise. It is set in the mid-1830s and narrated by Sophia, who was raised in Lyme Regis by her parents, Admiral Sir Frederick Wentworth and Lady Wentworth (née Miss. Anne Elliot). When Sir Walter Elliot dies, Mr. Elliot, the estranged cousin of Lady Wentworth, inherits the principal seat of the Elliot family, along with the baronetcy. Sir William occupies Kellynch Hall with his wife, Lady Isabella and their children... . Part 2, 'Of another Persuasion, is set in the late 1860s and narrated by Alice, daughter of Lord and Lady Benwick. Alice conceives an early ambition to travel and become an artist. She meets Monsieur Dubois, a French artist, who encourages her to go to Paris under the instruction of Monsieur Lefèvre... . Part 3, 'Of yet another Persuasion', is the story of Lady Sophia Alport, who returns with her family to settle in England when her father inherits Rambourne Hall, the seat of the Earls of Dethick. Lady Sophia has been influenced by her parents' liberal views. She attends the University of London to study law, since she has an ambition to campaign for social reform and for the vote for women.
