Dorothea Brooke is 'n 19-jarige weeskind, en woon saam met haar jonger suster, Celia, as 'n wyk van haar oom, mnr Brooke. Hy het homself bondgenote met Bulstrode, 'n welgestelde, kerkgoing grondeienaar en ontwikkelaar, wat 'n hospitaal en kliniek wil bou wat Lydgate se filosofie volg, ten spyte van die wangiwinge van Lydgate se vriend, Farebrother, oor Bulstrode se integriteit. Lydgate word ook bekend met Rosamond Vincy, wie se skoonheid en opvoeding saam met vlakkigheid en selfabsorpsie gaan. Op soek na 'n goeie wedstryd te maak, sy besluit om te trou Lydgate, wat kom uit 'n ryk familie, en gebruik Fred se siekte as 'n geleentheid om naby aan die dokter te kom.
