MANFREDO Manfredo é um nobre faustiano que vive nos Alpes de Berna. Torturado internamente por alguma culpa misteriosa, que tem a ver com a morte de sua amada, Astarte, ele usa seu domínio da linguagem e feitiço para convocar sete espíritos, dos quais busca o esquecimento. Os espíritos, que governam os vários componentes do mundo corporal, são incapazes de controlar os eventos passados e, portanto, não podem atender ao apelo de Manfredo. Por algum tempo, o destino o impede de escapar de sua culpa por meio do suicídio. O GIAOUR Byron foi inspirado a escrever o poema durante sua Grand Tour durante 1810 e 1811, que empreendeu com seu amigo John Cam Hobhouse. Enquanto estava em Atenas, ele tomou conhecimento do costume turco de jogar no mar uma mulher considerada culpada de adultério embrulhada em um saco.
