About the Book

How do human beings get changed? Renewing the Mind is the second volume of the Getting Changed trilogy, which offers the first sustained study of New Testament clothing metaphors. This book examines five passages where the apostles teach a kind of clothing curriculum to explain how Christians "put off" sin and "put on" their new self--by the renewal of the mind. Modern Westerners downstream of the Enlightenment often paint a picture of the mind that focuses on the intellect and crops out the imagination. But Paul, in harmony with the other apostles and prophets, shows that the imagination stands at the center of the mind. To renew the mind, then, is to renovate the imagination. How does this renewal occur? While much ink has been spilled in recent years regarding the practices most conducive to the Christian's spiritual formation, the apostles in their clothing curricula point to two foundational disciplines: meditation and contemplation. These often-overlooked exercises open the imagination to the Spirit's renewing work. Renewing the Mind invites readers to biblically explore the most basic process and practices by which God transforms his people.

About the Author :
William J. Davidson serves as associate pastor at Tabernacle Church of Norfolk, Virginia, where he lives with his family. He and his wife Sarah studied at Wheaton College Graduate School and later served as missionaries in Paraguay for four years. His work centers on biblical spirituality.

Review :
"Davidson's ground-breaking work offers a comprehensive and compelling account of mind renewal that engages the imagination and leads to a Christ-centered spirituality and lasting transformation."
--Brian S. Rosner, Director of Research, Ridley College, Melbourne

"Thoughtful, biblically grounded, and spiritually practical . . . a wise and timely work--one that will not only instruct the mind but also stir the heart and guide the reader into a deeper, more attentive life with Christ."
--Douglas Sean O'Donnell, Senior Vice President of Bible Editorial, Crossway

"What you hold in your hands is an important project because much of the literature on spiritual formation is theologically anemic and lacks the practical application that imitates the scriptural witness."
--Patrick Schreiner, Professor of New Testament and Biblical Theology, Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary

"[We] all owe a big thanks to William Davidson for providing this thorough survey and exploration of this important metaphor for describing the disciple's life in Christ."
--Kevin J. Vanhoozer, Blanchard Professor of Systematic Theology, Litfin Divinity School, Wheaton College

"William Davidson's Renewing the Mind is a tour de force of research, reasoning, and spiritual perception. His examination of the faculty of imagination and its role in spiritual formation is as insightful as it is provocative. He has returned imagination to the central place in spirituality it deserves. This is a must read for any person wanting to grow in Christ or help others to do so."
--Mark Jonas, Professor of Philosophy, Wheaton College
