About the Book

A favorite story of Christians throughout the ages, the Gospel of Matthew presents the life and message of Jesus in a vivid and compelling way. This brief commentary uses current approaches to the Bible to introduce readers afresh to the Matthean gospel of Jesus while retaining the appeal and the challenge of this age-old story Christians love to tell. Believers, seekers, and non-believers alike will find treasures both new and old in this engaging volume.

Review :
"Dr. Sheila McGinn has instilled years of academic and teaching experience to create a journey through the Gospel of Matthew in which scholarly expertise is always evident but never at the expense of narrative insight. She provides historical and social context to illuminate the text without suppressing the story. Any reader who takes up this book will come to appreciate why Matthew's story must still be told today."
--George M. Smiga, St. Mary Seminary and Graduate School of Theology

"McGinn walks the reader through each segment of the Gospel of Matthew, providing tantalizing insights and interesting treatments along the way. She incisively reads how the scribes responsible for the Gospel sought to express the message of and about Jesus in their context, and she consistently calls us to consider the contemporary ethical and economic relevance of the texts of the Gospel."
--Bart B. Bruehler, Director of Biblical Studies, Uniting College for Leadership and Theology, Yarthu Apinthi, Kaurna Country

"In this accessible introduction to the Gospel of Matthew, Sheila McGinn presents a nuanced portrayal of the cultural world of the Gospel, writing as a masterful storyteller who brings the words of the Gospel to life for twenty-first-century readers. With review and study questions at the end of each chapter, the book will be ideal for individual home study, for reading groups, and as an entrée in courses on the Gospels. Highly recommended!"
--Thomas R. Blanton IV, Visiting Assistant Professor of Theology and Religious Studies, John Carroll University

"Sheila McGinn crowns a long and distinguished career as a professor and scholar with this lively, readable, amazingly rich book on the Gospel of Matthew. It is designed for use by college and university classes as well as serious adult learners, all of whom will find it a rich resource for understanding Matthew, in many ways one of the most demanding of the Four Gospels. Freshness marks the approach to this very ancient work; Telling the Story of Jesus reflects the latest scholarship and presents it in a highly approachable way. This comes as no surprise to me as Sheila's long-time friend, collaborator, and occasional editor! I hope newer readers will cherish it as well."
--Linda M. Maloney, Retired Pastor, Episcopal Diocese of Vermont
