About the Book

This book explores one of the most contentious issues in contemporary thought: the relationship between Christian theism and evolutionary theory. In a defense of theistic evolution, the author argues that God's purposes and evolutionary processes are not merely compatible but can be reconciled in a way that is both viable and intellectually compelling. The book addresses several pressing questions: Does evolution conflict with biblical revelation? Can divine purpose coexist with apparently random evolutionary processes? Does evolution increase suffering, diminish human status, and undermine purpose? Engaging a range of views, the author clarifies crucial concepts concerning chance, randomness, determinism, unpredictability, and divine action, showing how misunderstanding and confusion have often led people astray. Written in an accessible yet rigorous style, the book presents theistic evolution as a more reasonable framework than competing theological approaches or atheistic naturalism. Written for philosophers, theologians, clergy, educators, and general readers, this book--one of the first to robustly defend theistic evolution's viability--offers a constructive path forward, upholding both divine providence and a commitment to science.

About the Author :
Brendan Sweetman is Professor of Philosophy at Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Missouri. He is also an Elected Fellow of the International Society for Science and Religion.

Review :
"The tension between chance and purpose is one of the most important issues in debates over evolution and theism. Sweetman navigates this terrain with uncommon clarity, making a strong case that physical determinism is both scientifically and theologically defensible. The book offers a necessary corrective to contemporary 'hands-off' theologies that have become increasingly strained in their attempts to reconcile divine purpose with randomness. It engages seriously with the main proposals in the literature and offers an attractive alternative."
--Jeffrey Koperski, Professor of Philosophy, Saginaw Valley State University, Michigan

"Brendan Sweetman's Is Theistic Evolution Viable? will challenge believers and nonbelievers alike, arguing for a theological evolutionism that goes far beyond the common creationist and atheist/naturalist tropes. The author offers a novel approach to the religion and science debate, arguing that a creator and providential God is not only compatible but reconcilable with what the biological sciences tell us about evolution. Sweetman offers compelling arguments that will need to be engaged in future discussions of Christianity and evolution."
--William Sweet, Chair, Department of Philosophy, St Francis Xavier University, Nova Scotia, Canada

"Exploring intellectual territory that was presumed to be well mapped, this study brings a fresh dynamism and a razor-sharp philosophical focus to the problem of compatibility between randomness and order in our universe. Sweetman brings candor and logic to bear on the English-speaking natural theology that has emanated from engagements with science over the past thirty years."
--Paul Allen, Undergraduate Dean, Corpus Christi College, Vancouver, Canada
