About the Book

How does a shy, backward country boy who grew up in a small rural community become a senior program specialist in the United States Department of Education in Washington D.C.? How did that happen? Was he just lucky? I was that boy, and this book is my story! I had no idea I would be privileged to serve our country by helping the next generation of agriculturalists. Sometimes, it's hard for me to believe I've had such a wonderful career and life. I do know that I did not do it alone--God, my family, and my friends were all important parts of my journey. I am truly amazed by the people I have met, the places I have been, and the things I have done. God has blessed this Missouri farm boy beyond belief. As I have gotten much older and shared memories with others, many of my listeners have said, "You should write a book!" The purpose of this book is to share my story, beliefs, background, and point of view on significant moments in my life. While it is not intended to be a history book for agriculture education/FFA, I was involved in that field during a critical time in its history. If you're interested in navigating organizational change through challenging times, this book can provide insight.

About the Author :
Larry Case came into the world in Stet, Missouri and was raised by a loving family on a diversified farm. He enjoyed farming, but found he loved teaching agriculture even more. After earning his degree from the University of Missouri, Larry taught vocational agriculture in Missouri, working his way through the leadership ranks to become the state director of agricultural education. After marrying, having a family, and making his mark in Missouri, Larry was recruited to the position of senior program specialist for agricultural education in the U.S. Department of Education, which necessitated a move to the greater Washington, D.C. area in 1984. His predecessor established a comprehensive leadership structure that became known as the National Council for Agricultural Education, which enabled Larry to pioneer a broader educational system for agriculture through the critical days of the 1980s farm crisis. He officially retired in 2010 but continued to serve in leadership roles with the National FFA Alumni Association and several state-level organizations. Larry resides in Fredericksburg, Virginia, and is active in his church, community, and agricultural education.

Review :
Over the past 40 years in my FFA journey as a member to my role as National FFA's chief executive officer, there has been one continuous thread, Dr. Larry Case. When I memorized his name for quiz bowl little did I know I would be blessed to serve under him as an employee of National FFA and a state leader. Dr. Case shepherded our organization out of declining membership in the 1980s to growth in the 1990s and into a new millennium. Because of his legacy and leadership, National FFA is now making a positive difference in the lives of more than 850,000 members annually. During our years as colleagues in the agricultural education profession, Dr. Case proved to be the right leader for the right time. His steady hand guided the relocation of the FFA Center to Indianapolis and the national FFA convention to Louisville and, ultimately, Indianapolis. Through it all, Dr. Case led with a heart of service: service to students, service to the profession of FFA and agricultural education, service to his community, service to his nation, and service to his faith. Thank you, Dr. Case, for choosing to invest your life's work in "developing the potential of students for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education. Mission accomplished! - Scott Stump, Chief Executive Officer, National FFA Organization
