About the Book

In this rhyming story, an inquisitive first-grader's interest in another student's toy leads to a helpful conversation with her teacher about the difference between a child's wants and needs at school. The repetitive phrase "We all need something sometimes," consistently highlights the message of the book, as Bea McGee realizes that equitable does not mean equal. Readers will gain perspective that there is a difference between needs and wants, and that they themselves experience both -- just like the characters. The story addresses the varying needs at school, spanning from special education modifications, social supports, socio-economic challenges, and everyday happenings in the classroom. It is a story of empathy and understanding.

About the Author :
I am a wife, a mother of two adventurous little boys, and an early-childhood educator for the last 20 years in New Jersey and Maryland. Currently I am a kindergarten teacher in Princeton, New Jersey. I'm known for enjoying summers at the beach, spending way too much money at Target, and for making a stellar Buffalo Chicken Dip that you won't be able to walk away from. You could say I've been writing my whole life. It all started in first grade when I began creating my own "hard cover" books out of Highlights magazine covers, lots of tape and staples while my dad typed away at his typewriter next to me. Getting my thoughts out on paper always seemed more natural to me than speaking them most of the time. I am a first-time children's picture book author and wrote my book to solve a recurring problem in my kindergarten classroom. I wanted to create a story that would help teachers, parents, and counselors. My hope is to turn this book into an engaging series that would tackle other problems in the everyday classroom in a relatable and relevant way.

Review :
"This is an excellent book and there should absolutely be a copy in every elementary classroom. It was great to read with my son and prompt discussion about the tools he needs to be successful in class, and what he has observed that other kids need and the similarities and differences. The difference between wants and needs is such a great discussion, and nurtures inclusivity in a big way! Can't wait for more books from this wonderful author!" "This book was a fantastic resource when trying to explain the differences between wants and needs to my two little kids. These conversations can be challenging to navigate and to find the right words for and it was incredibly helpful to go through the book with so many examples to teach them with. I learned so much myself, including many of the different tools parents or teachers can use to help their kids do their best at school!" "Teaching empathy and understanding can be a difficult task, however this books encapsulates these lessons in an easy to read and enjoyable book that is beautifully written. My son resides in a classroom setting where accommodations are made for many of the students and while he doesn't necessarily have this same need for his own learning, this book taught us both that we really all do need something sometimes." "Our kids absolutely love this book and so do we as parents! The message is heartfelt, relatable, and beautifully written in a way that speaks to both children and adults. It's the kind of book that sparks meaningful conversations and reminds us all of the importance of kindness, connection, and understanding. A true must-have for any family's bookshelf." "Although I'm not an educator, as a parent of five, I've seen firsthand how often children can feel left out. This book offers a timely and gentle reminder that fairness doesn't always mean treating everyone the same-it means giving each child what they need. It's a beautifully told story that encourages empathy and understanding, helping children (and adults alike) see the value in compassion, even when things don't seem "fair." A truly valuable resource for families, caregivers, and classrooms alike." "This charming tale, told in rhyming couplets, is a perfect tool for developing empathy in young children. It follows Bea McGee, a first grader jealous of the special things her classmates have. Thanks to her caring teacher Ms Davis, Bea learns that everyone has different needs sometimes. This helps her come to an even bigger realization - that she's not the only one whose needs matter. Authored by early childhood educator Tyler S. D. Kukla, this book combines wit, wisdom and warmth." "This is a wonderful children's book about empathy and interacting with others in a positive way. I have a 1.5 year old and the colorful illustrations and rhyme scheme were perfect to keep her engaged, and I look forward to reading it to her as she grows to teach her valuable lessons about not comparing herself to others, showing empathy, and knowing everyone is different!"
