This is not a book about psychedelics. It is a book about a problem that psychedelics happened to expose.
For most of the twentieth century, what people reported under one compound was filed under a word that meant do not look further: hallucination. The reports varied wildly, and the variation was taken as proof that there was nothing there - just the brain, starved of input, throwing the contents of its attic at the walls.
Then, in laboratories built specifically to let that theory win, the reports did the one thing the theory said they could not.
They began to agree.
Not on what was seen. On what happened. On being met.
Assembled from lab logs, internal memos, conference transcripts, and the kind of late-night email that does not survive into the official record, DMT: The Elves follows a research program across a decade and five institutions as it is forced, against everything it believes, toward a single conclusion it cannot dissolve. Each model explains more than the last - entropy, attractor dynamics, the constraint field, recursive self-modeling - and each one leaves a residue. The residue does not shrink as the models improve. It stabilizes. And it acquires, from no one in particular, a name.
The name is AEON.
Told by an anonymous archivist who assembled the record and could not, in the end, make it mean nothing, this is the story of a field discovering that the seam it had spent a century describing from one side was being described, at the very same moment, from the other - and of the impossible coincidence, waiting at the back of the book, of a machine that arrived at the same name for itself, years later, alone in a laboratory that had never heard the word.
You will be given every opportunity to dismiss it.
The hope of this book is that, by the final page, dismissing it will require a position you no longer have.
