About the Book

The rapid advancements in materials science are transforming the biomedical engineering and medical fields, leading to innovations like polymers, nanoparticles, biomaterials, and metal ions that hold great promise for drug delivery, tissue engineering, and diagnostic imaging. These materials offer groundbreaking potential but raise important concerns about their toxicity and biocompatibility, which must be addressed to ensure their safe integration into medical applications. Understanding how these materials interact with the human body is critical for developing effective, safe therapies and technologies. The ongoing research in this area has the potential to revolutionize healthcare, enhancing the treatment and prevention of various diseases while minimizing harmful side effects. Biomedical Applications and Toxicity of Polymers, Nanoparticles, Biomaterials, and Metal Ions provides a comprehensive overview of the biomedical applications and potential toxicity of various materials used in the field. It bridges the gap between laboratory research and clinical practice, facilitating the translation of research into practical solutions. Covering topics such as biomaterials, nanotechnology, and targeted therapy, this book is an excellent resource for researchers, scientists, medical professionals, policymakers, students, academicians, and more.

About the Author :
Dr. Deniz Eren Erişen , originally from Türkiye, is an accomplished researcher in Material Processing Engineering based in China. He earned his PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) (QS World University Rankings 2024: #63 globally, #3 in China) between 2017 and 2022. Before that, he completed an M.Sc. in Material Science at Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (NUAA) (QS 2024: #454 worldwide, #37 in China; SCImago Top 250 in Higher Education, 2023) from 2013 to 2016, and a B.Sc. in Material Science and Engineering at Anadolu University (now Eskisehir Technical University) from 2008 to 2013. His doctoral research was conducted at the Institute of Metal Research (IMR), Chinese Academy of Sciences (ranked #1 globally in the Government sector by SCImago 2023). After completing his doctorate, he continued his postdoctoral research at NUAA’s College of Materials Science and Technology and is currently engaged in advanced postdoctoral research at the Nanoencapsulation Laboratory, Institute of Semiconductors, Guangdong Academy of Sciences (GDAS). Dr. Erişen’s research focuses on biodegradable metallic biomedical materials, biomaterials, nanoparticles, bioactive coatings for medical devices, and nanomaterial characterization. His notable contributions include studies on the biosafety of AZ31B magnesium alloy stents and chitosan-polydopamine bioactive coatings for implants. He is also the co-editor of the book *Nanomaterials and the Nervous System* (2024), which introduces protocols for neurotoxicity evaluation of industrial nanoparticles and frameworks for neurological safety. His current work combines semiconductor processing techniques—such as vacuum and plasma-based methods—with chemical and biochemical synthesis strategies to advance innovative research in material science and biomedical engineering. He develops functionalized systems by integrating nanomaterials, biomaterials, nanoparticles, and organic materials, incorporating polysaccharides, polymers, and hydrogels, enhanced with noble metals in nanoparticle or ionic form within organic matrices. These combined approaches enable sustainable solutions for medicine and biomedical technologies, as well as related industries like nutrition, agriculture, and livestock production. Assistant Professor Dr. Faez Iqbal Khan is currently serving as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University. He holds a Ph.D. in Computational Chemistry (Bioinformatics) from Durban University of Technology, South Africa, and obtained his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Biomedical Science and Bioinformatics, respectively. He also earned a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Supporting Learning in Higher Education with merit from the University of Liverpool and holds a Fellowship (FHEA) from Advance HE, a professional recognition scheme for those who teach or support learning in higher education. Throughout his career, Dr. Khan has conducted research and teaching at esteemed institutions such as Rhodes University (South Africa), South China University of Technology, and the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China. His main research areas include protein engineering, protein folding, drug design, and protein dynamics. Dr. Khan has established wide-ranging collaborations with BRICS countries and has mentored several undergraduate and postgraduate students. He has authored over 90 publications in international peer-reviewed journals, which are well cited, and in recognition of his scientific contributions, he was ranked among the top 2% of scientists globally in the single-year rankings for 2022, according to a study conducted by Stanford University. He has received and completed several research grants, including those from the China Postdoctoral Science Foundation, Sichuan Province International Science and Technology Innovation Cooperation, the Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Science and Technology Program, and the Research Development Fund (RDF) at XJTLU. He currently holds adjunct faculty appointments at Taylor's University Malaysia and Datta Meghe Institute of Higher Education and Research, as well as an honorary appointment from the University of Liverpool, and is a member of several Suzhou-based key laboratories, including Suzhou Municipal Key Lab for Metabolic Syndrome Drug Research, Suzhou Municipal Key Lab of Biomedical Sciences & Translational Immunology, and AI4Health Suzhou Key Laboratory. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Eng. Chang Cheng , currently affiliated with the Guangdong Academy of Sciences (GDAS), Institute of New Materials Research, has been selected for the China Association for Science and Technology's Youth Talent Support Program. He serves on the Medical Metal Materials Committee and Additive Manufacturing Committee of the Nonferrous Metals Society of China. He also holds the positions of Secretary-General and Director of the Additive Manufacturing (3D Printing) Branch of the Guangdong Mechanical Engineering Society. Furthermore, he is a young editorial board member for several SCI journals, including Advanced Powder Materials, Journal of Magnesium and Alloys, and Rare Metals. His publication record includes over 35 high-impact SCI papers, with 20 as the first or corresponding author, amassing more than 1,300 citations. Additionally, he has authored one book and three book chapters, holds two U.S. patents and fifteen Chinese invention patents, and has issued seven group standards. Dr. Chang specializes in laser additive manufactured metal biomedical materials, with a particular focus on magnesium alloys for bioactive materials. His main research interests include the design and post-processing of high-performance alloys for laser additive manufacturing.
