En Gargantas Sofocadas. La Alianza de José Martí con los Negros, el Dr. Miguel Cabrera Peña demuele una narrativa de más de tres décadas donde al poeta (1853-1895) se le suele ubicar como un cuasi racista. Vigente todavía, el espacio primordial de tal relato es la academia norteamericana. Martí convivió por años con amigos afrocaribeños y esta fue la experiencia habilitante para pensar la resistencia no violenta como metodología para conquistar los derechos efectivos de la raza. Sin dejar de lado la necesidad social del negro, tal resistencia la proclamó hasta la muerte incluida. Su solidaridad propició que la voz del oprimido batallara en el principal periódico de la independencia anticolonial. El canónico The Souls of Black Folk (1903), del eminente W.E.B Du Bois, se compara durante dos capítulos con Martí, prueba irrefutable de la mayor radicalidad antirracista de este. Imprescindibles como John Brown, Douglass y Garnet respiran aquí, y entre unos treinta temas privativos acerca de Cuba y Estados Unidos, Martí condena el relato del miedo al negro y se exponen las razones de su silencio sobre la solidaridad de los afroamericanos con la independencia isleña. La causa de su crítica a George Washington y las dirigidas contra Lincoln y la colonización vibran en el volumen. El poeta evaluó el mito-ideología sureña de Lost Cause o Causa Perdida, que todavía se discute en Estados Unidos. Siempre antiesclavista radical, aún adolescente escribe la primera obra del teatro isleño con un negro como protagonista, y luego refleja al despreciado abakuá como elemento integrante de la cultura cubana. A un capitán homosexual, negro y de religión africana lo institucionaliza como héroe de su patria y pronto escribe que aceptaría que una hija hipotética suya se uniera en matrimonio con un negro. Los sentidos martianos del cuerpo de la raza y su belleza llenan un capítulo. El desprecio por la verdad en gran porción de la universidad occidental y desde luego la norteamericana, se evidencia en un artículo del académico Francisco Morán. ¿Será este un botón de la posverdad con la que el globalismo adoctrina, infecta y va transformando a la universidad en vocera donde todos los blancos, vivos o en la historia, son sistemática y esencialmente racistas? El Epílogo esboza cómo los megapotentados del globalismo, a través de un Himalaya financiero, están decididos a controlar el planeta y convertir al ciudadano en esclavo. El republicanismo de Martí tiene qué decir al respecto. Acentuando la novedad de Gargantas sofocadas, el Profesor Emérito Rafael Saumell afirmó que este es el libro más revelador que se haya escrito sobre José Martí.
