About the Book

These scenarios of collision avoidance are set at Singapore strait outside Eastern Pilot Boarding Ground Alfa as Figure 8-01. These exercises are conducted by professional mariner, senior master, junior OOW in well-known shipping company training center which represent their apprehension of how to solve the risk. The seniority in sea time cannot guarantee the success in these exercises. Nor seniority can cope with new concept fast than junior OOW. We like to encourage young OOW acted in Master's role who will be in charge of ship handling. Anyway, these exercises provide an opportunity for them to review their visual and radar lookout skill without real danger. In human element study:

  • Real collision avoidance scenario will generate too much mental and physical pressure on our memory structure which is no good for further study.
  • In extreme danger, our memory structure is depressed to our long memory only. After a car accident happened the victims can only remember the white light they saw, nothing else.
  • Local variants as environmental factors like course, speed, wind ... stored in our short-term memory are forgotten after high pressure situation.
  • Some important information may be lost for those who maneuver, some information may never be known for those who come to assist.
  • What learning objectives or operational procedures instructor briefing before exercise is only our short- term memory. Some captain who had previous experiences may remember better and some may not.
  • When exercise is conducting, some instructor insists no interruption and some will intervene when first sign of flaw is coming.
I am opined to latter. I will stop the exercise and summon all bridge teams to brief what is wrong or what we can do to improve the situation. In instructor station when all four vessel is departed from same place, every bridge's heading and route they chose are tracks on monitor. By stop them in critical point as we had discussed before, we can show them which bridge is in more favor position and the reasons why? I believe human are working with very limited short-term memories (environments) and long-term memories (skill) in our working memory together. Some captains are not so smart but he could be a Captain. He is supported by his long-term skills and self-trained procedures which could be referred as his working habits. The working habit in these professional mariners may be good, maybe not. The exercise is designed to test their competence. Some do it in good order, some do it with panic. If they did not have correct working habit they can learn from instructor's briefing or lectures before the exercise which are very unreliable because it is short-term memory (might last 20 seconds only if he has no idea at all). Interrupted exercise and briefing again can provide refresh periods in their short-term memories. Thus the learning objectives and environment observations are mixed together with their annoy and regret and their performances which will form a strong bond in their training exercises.

It is my purpose.
