About the Book

Wildland firefighting is one of the most physically demanding and dangerous professions in the United States. The work takes place in rugged terrain, under extreme conditions, and often far from home. For the women who chose this path, earning a place on the fireline required determination, resilience, and a deep commitment to the work.

In "The Fire Chronicles: Stories from Women Wildland Firefighters," former wildland firefighter Carol Henson brings together the voices of women who served across the wildland fire service. Through in-depth interviews and personal reflections, these women share their experiences working on handcrews, hotshot crews, engine crews, helitack crews, smokejumpers, fire pilots, fire dispatch, fire prevention, fuels management, fire lookouts, and leadership roles throughout the United States.

Their stories span decades of service and reflect the many paths women took into the wildland fire world. Some spent only a few seasons on the line, while others built long careers and moved into leadership roles within the wildland fire service. Each story offers insight into the realities of life in wildland fire: earning respect among peers, working as part of tightly bonded crews, facing the physical and mental demands of the job, and navigating the balance between career, leadership, and family.

Beyond the fireline, these accounts reveal the strength, perseverance, and sense of purpose that drew these women to the work. They speak candidly about challenges, opportunities, and the evolving role of women in a profession historically considered a male-only occupation. Together, their voices provide a powerful and deeply human look at the wildland fire world.

Building on the historical foundation established in her first book, "The Fire Within: A History of Women Wildland Firefighters in the United States," Henson shifts the focus from history to lived experience. "The Fire Chronicles" preserves the personal stories of women whose contributions helped shape the modern wildland fire service.

Readers interested in wildland firefighting, women's history, outdoor professions, and stories of resilience and leadership will find in these pages a deeper understanding of the people behind the work and the communities they helped build.

About the Author :

Carol Henson is a former wildland firefighter who spent nearly thirty years with the U.S. Forest Service working in the wildland fire service. During her career, she served in a variety of operational and leadership roles, gaining firsthand experience in the demanding and often unpredictable world of wildland fire. Following her time with the Forest Service, she worked for ten years as a fire consultant, continuing her involvement in the fire community and sharing her knowledge and experience with others in the field.

Henson is the author of "The Fire Within: A History of Women Wildland Firefighters in the United States," a groundbreaking historical study that documents the often-overlooked contributions of women in wildland fire. Through extensive research, archival work, and interviews, the book traces the presence of women on the fireline from the earliest recorded accounts to the modern era.

Her second book, "The Fire Chronicles: Stories from Women Wildland Firefighters," builds on that historical foundation by focusing on the lived experiences of women who served across the wildland fire service. Drawing on in-depth interviews, the book shares the personal stories of women who worked on handcrews, hotshot crews, engine crews, helitack crews, smokejumpers, fire pilots, fire dispatch, fire prevention, fuels management, fire lookouts, and leadership roles throughout the United States.. Their voices offer insight into what it took to enter a demanding profession, earn respect on the fireline, and build careers while navigating the challenges of leadership, family, and life beyond the fireline.

Through her writing, Henson works to document and preserve the history, contributions, and lived experiences of women in the wildland fire service. Her work highlights the resilience, determination, and leadership of women who helped shape the modern wildland fire community.
