About the Book

There have been some incredibly audacious scams where con artists "sold" famous infrastructure and landmarks they didn't own. Here are some of the most notorious cases: 1. The Sale of the Eiffel Tower (Twice!) Conman: Victor Lustig Year: 1925 Lustig posed as a government official and convinced scrap metal dealers that the French government was secretly selling the Eiffel Tower for scrap. One businessman paid a hefty bribe to secure the "deal," only to realize he had been scammed. Lustig later repeated the scam! 2. The Brooklyn Bridge Sold Multiple Times Conmen: George C. Parker, William McCloundy Years: Late 1800s - early 1900s George C. Parker famously "sold" the Brooklyn Bridge many times, tricking immigrants and businessmen into thinking they could charge tolls. Some even tried to set up toll booths before being stopped by police. 3. The Sydney Opera House Scam Conman: Unknown fraudsters Year: 1970s Some con artists in the 1970s convinced wealthy buyers that the Australian government was selling the Sydney Opera House to private investors, leading to losses before authorities intervened. 4. The White House Scam Conman: Natwarlal (India's legendary con artist) Years: Mid-20th century Natwarlal, a master forger, "sold" the Indian Parliament, the Taj Mahal, and even the White House (to foreign buyers) using fake documents. 5. The London Bridge Sold to an American Conmen: Not really a scam, but misleading advertising Year: 1968 Robert P. McCulloch, an American businessman, purchased London Bridge believing it was the more iconic Tower Bridge. While not an outright scam, some claim he was misled into thinking he was getting something more impressive. 6. The Sale of the Statue of Liberty Conman: Multiple scammers Years: Late 19th and early 20th centuries Various con artists tricked gullible investors into believing they could buy the Statue of Liberty and charge visitors fees.
