About the Book

BEYOND CONSTRUCTION: The Civil Rights Journey of Joseph Dunbar Gamble Joseph Dunbar Gamble's life is a powerful narrative of resilience, determination, and social change. Born on September 29, 1926, in the racially segregated town of Browder, Kentucky, Gamble faced tremendous challenges growing up in a community defined by poverty, limited education, and the harsh realities of racial injustice. Yet, from these circumstances, emerged a man whose life and work would leave a lasting legacy of advocacy and empowerment. Raised by his father, Thomas Gamble, a coal miner, and his mother, Bessie, Joseph grew up learning the importance of hard work, community, and the pursuit of education, despite the overwhelming scarcity of resources in his town. The values instilled by his parents, especially the emphasis on perseverance and unity, would later shape his unwavering commitment to social justice. After enlisting in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II, Joseph gained valuable life experiences that broadened his understanding of leadership, empathy, and moral responsibility. These lessons would lay the foundation for his post-war activism. Settling in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and later Albuquerque, New Mexico, Gamble forged a path as an entrepreneur, becoming the first African American licensed contractor in Albuquerque through his company, Abdullah Construction. Yet his work extended far beyond business success. A dedicated civil rights advocate, he actively participated in historic events like the March on Washington, fought for fair housing, and helped establish the Afro-American Cultural Center in Albuquerque, which became a vital space for cultural expression and education in his community. BEYOND CONSTRUCTION: The Civil Rights Journey of Joseph Dunbar Gamble chronicles the extraordinary life of a man who defied societal constraints to create a legacy of equality, community, and empowerment. His journey-from overcoming adversity in a segregated Kentucky town to challenging racial barriers in the construction industry-remains a testament to the power of determination. Gamble's work continues to inspire those fighting for justice and equality, proving that even the most difficult circumstances can fuel meaningful change. This book is a tribute to his life and his profound impact on future generations committed to creating a fairer and more just society.
