About the Book

In an epic telling of the events leading to the outbreak of the American Revolution in 1775, this tale brings its characters into contact with Paul Revere, Sam Adams, and John Hancock, as well as British Generals Thomas Gage, Lord Hugh Percy, and Major John Pitcairn. Events take you from last days of peace to the clash at Lexington Green and the North Bridge in Concord. Two families struggle with loyalties on the eve of the American War for Independence. The Lathams live in colonial Massachusetts. After John Latham left his parents to fight against the enemy in the French and Indian War, he returned home after suffering and loss with a quiet determination to place his family before all else. A decade later, in 1775, the turmoil caused by London's actions against its American colonies threatens the peace. John Latham knows the cost of war. He also holds a bond to the British soldiery that once saved his life. He sees the brewing rebellion against the British government as calamity to all. John Latham's wife, Katherine, an émigré from Ireland, sees the presence of the British soldiers in the colony leading to only one possible outcome, war. She questions John's hesitance to embrace the patriot cause, as do his closest friends. Meanwhile, General Thomas Gage is charged with ending discontent in the American colonies. His American-born wife, Margaret, works to support her husband even as he works to crush the growing colonial opposition to the crown. While John Latham prepares to depart to Boston with his best friend and young son to sell a fine cabinet he has crafted over the long winter, Margaret Gage is forced to decide between her affinity for the patriot cause and the marriage to the man she loves. With the outbreak or war at the Battles of Lexington and Concord, all are faced with challenges unforeseen and actions unimaginable the day before as they struggle to protect their futures. An historical novel that you will never forget.
