About the Book

"Stop Rewind Fast Forward" presents itself as but one history of popular music. In this case, the year 1992 is examined in detail, with a primary focus on the acts Guns N' Roses and Soundgarden, and how they relate to the overall climate of the era. As the timeline advances and their paths cross, leading to a Dayton, Ohio concert featuring both, their respective bodies of work are considered in detail, as the author puts his own unique spin on what these bands were attempting and whether or not they achieved it. 1992 in music was a year like no other, with everyone ranging from Guns N' Roses to grunge to country to Michael Jackson battling for supremacy in the charts. But it didn't quite happen as you were told.

This work stitches together little known and sometimes unknown facts in a unique but compelling tapestry. Many for example are unaware that two members of Soundgarden, one of the guys who started Sub Pop records, and the talent scout who signed Guns N' Roses to their first major label record deal...all went to the same high school together...in Illinois! Or that Duff McKagan, though most well-known as bass player for Guns N' Roses, was essentially the original drummer for underground rock legends The Fastbacks. Chris Cornell of Soundgarden also started out as a drummer, for the very band which made him famous! Flea of Red Hot Chili used to hang out at Steven Adler's house and play trumpet for his grandparents. Slash's mom dated David Bowie and his dad designed album covers for some of the biggest bands of the 70s. These and many other stories await the curious reader, who are sure to enjoy Jason McGathey's densely packed and rich but briskly paced writing style, as he reveals each band's history in detail, and how they ended up on the same tour in early 1992 - as well as the overall musical climate of the time, and what led us to this singular point in pop culture history.
