Helping English Language Learners Transition to ASE, GED, HiSET, or Technical Training Classes

This reading comprehension textbook is designed to help learners improve their general knowledge in life science while developing strong reading comprehension skills necessary for transitioning to ASE (Adult Secondary Education), GED (General Educational Development), HiSET (High School Equivalency Test), or technical training. Books 1 and 2 align with and exceed the English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS) for Adult Education, the College and Career Readiness Standards, and the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) expectations. This ensures that your ESL/ELL (English Language Learners) students can read, understand, and apply content-based lessons along with academic concepts and instructions. Additionally, this textbook addresses the GED and HiSET life science standards.

Teaching Frameworks Featured in Book 2

The textbook applies two evidence-based teaching frameworks: Bloom's Taxonomy and SQ3R reading method.

Content-Based Learning

Book 2 combines reading comprehension development with life science content, equipping learners with the necessary background knowledge and academic skills for success in ASE, GED, HiSET, and technical courses. The units will address core topics including:

  • Health and Nutrition: Learn the importance of diet and exercise and describe diseases, preventive practices, and personal hygiene.
  • Diversity of Life: Classification, plant and animal structures, adaptations, and life cycles.
  • Evolution and Adaptation: Physical and behavioral adaptations, natural selection, and environmental influence on species.

In summary, Book 2 offers 7 Units and 21 lessons designed to equip students with strategies for identifying main ideas, uncovering details, making inferences, summarizing content, applying knowledge, and understanding authors' perspectives and key concepts. Through these lessons, students will develop the skills and confidence needed to navigate academic content and enhance their understanding of life science.
