Long before the drought broke Jack Coleman's world, something in the stars had already chosen it.
On a dying farm near Oakhaven, Jack and his mother Elara are living one bad decision at a time. The fields are gray, the garden is dead, the flour jar shows its bottom, and the family cow may be the last thing between them and hunger. Then, on the road to market, Jack meets a nameless merchant who offers five black seeds in place of honest ruin.
