About the Book

The desert was quiet as sin. A vast, blistered basin of heat and ruin, stretched under a pale sky that had long since forgotten how to rain. The land here did not speak, it rasped. Cracked and desolate, it sprawled like an ancient scar across the earth, flat and hollowed by a sun that never blinked. The air itself had turned brittle, dry as sun-dried parchment and twice as cruel. Even the cacti leaned with a certain sorrow, as if they too remembered what this place had once been, and wished they could forget. Only the wind moved freely, sighing low across the baked earth, dragging with it broken prayers, rusted bits of rail, scorched relics of promises never kept. Sometimes it unearthed bones, half-buried femurs or finger joints clutching nothing, carried in a whisper across the sand like old debts finally come due. This was not a place of beginning. It was where things came to end. And at the center of it all, squatting in the heat like a blister that refused to burst, sat the town of Lament's Ridge. It was a place never meant to exist. No map bore its name. No railway ever connected it to the world that turned beyond the desert's edge. But long ago, men had found gold buried in the stone beneath the town's bones, deep veins wound through quartz and ash like shame through blood. And that was all it took. Word got out, and with it came the flood: rough men with shovels and dynamite, preachers with their own gospel, drunkards, charlatans, and the ever-hopeful. They brought their tents, their lies, and their need. They carved their names into the land and dared to build something on the grave of what came before. And then the letters began. They arrived without warning, each one sealed in wax the color of old blood, each envelope edged in gold leaf, crisp and impossibly clean. No return address. No explanation. Only a single phrase pressed into the wax in a language most had to look up: Balance Required. When the first letter reached the polished desk of an investment firm in Tombstone, it was burned. When the second came, the partners went pale. By the time the third arrived, bearing only a ledger with numbers scratched out like names from a tombstone, they understood. Something old had stirred. And it was calling in the debt. So they sent someone. Not just anyone. They sent their quietest man. The one with no family, no record, no appetite for vices or attachments. The man who had never lost a number. Not to error. Not to betrayal. Not even to death. His name was Jonathan Edevane. He arrived in Lament's Ridge with a suitcase of ledgers bound in human skin, a fountain pen honed to a needle, a purse of silver coin that never seemed to empty, and a secret older than the town itself. Because Jonathan Edevane had been here before. A century ago, when the ground still wept and the stars had not yet turned their eyes away. Back when the first preacher came, the one who found the gate beneath the hollow hills. Edevane had walked these dust-choked streets long before they bore names, and now he was back. Not to settle. To collect. Because in the end, all debts come due. And in places like Lament's Ridge, where men traded blood for gold and built churches atop forgotten wounds, the books are always kept. Even if the ink turns black as sin.
