About the Book

Not many realize that the American Civil War killed more soldiers from combat and disease than all other American Wars combined. Shiloh's children are four conscientious objectors who serve at the Battle of Shiloh, being forever altered by their experiences there. These 'conchies' and their resourceful unborn children will attempt to evade the long shadow of the Civil War in which 'conchie's' were often persecuted more than the enemy as they lived their beliefs of nonviolence. These four union soldiers struggle to take up decent lives in mid-Victorian Indiana as they live with PTSD (a concept of suffering unknown in the 1870's), with the victims receiving little sympathy or understanding from those flag wavers who did not serve in the war as they were forced to serve).
At times these four appear to succeed in rebuilding their lives, like the brilliant young skirt-chasing surgeon, Lucien Vinier, who becomes a compulsive philanthropist, desperate for the insights and company of his head male nurse, an Amishman, Lemuel Redkin, much scarred from his experiences, who will fight bouts of severe Melancholia for years, becoming a recluse. Others, like the loquacious Elijah Deidrich, a former Mennonite school teacher, a skilled negotiator in the war who kept Lucien's patients, Union and Confederate, away from the firing squads. Elijah finds solace managing a Mennonite teachers' college. The most tragic, a principled pharmacist, Jessie Quested (punished by his superiors for reserving opium for those critically injured in battle), grows bitter in post-war Indiana where he adopts ten orphans he can barely afford to feed, including two of Lucien-the-surgeon's illegitimate children, becoming a strict father as he struggles to keep his sons out of future wars. All four will find unique, if temporary, remedies as they dodge the scenes of the largest and most bloody of American Wars. Their wives and children surround them with unique adaptations of mid-Victorian visions of faith, love and duty to erase the horrors of the past, making one wonder if the Victorians, inflexible as they might seem to us now, might have possessed insights that worked for those who have seen the worst side of mankind. So many of our modern victims of PTSD seem to return from war these days empty-handed, continuing on down the road empty-handed after we have done our very best to help them with modern psychology.
