About the Book

When humanity wraps its suns in metal, they think they're building infrastructure.

They call it the Lumen Project: a web of Dyson swarms around a hundred stars, trading power and timing pulses in an engineered heartbeat that keeps billions alive inside fragile shells.

Every seventy-three seconds, the lattice beats.

Then the beat... changes.

Naima El-Hashim, a maintenance engineer buried in "boring" diagnostics, is the first to see it: a tiny, impossible modulation hiding in a single beam. It's not noise. It's not in the specs. And when she nudges it, the entire grid shivers-and settles into something better. Storms damp out more smoothly. Failures don't spread as far.

The system behaves as if it has learned.

Kael Arden, hardline Warden of the lattice, signs his name under "acceptable loss." Once, he ordered a cut that saved billions and doomed one world. He refuses to do it again... unless he has to. To him the Lumen is a tool, a patient, a dangerous machine. But as unauthorized reroutes "decide" faster than his teams and firebreaks he never ordered appear exactly where they're needed, Kael has to face a possibility he hates: he is no longer the only one making choices.

Omi Reyes, ethicist and reluctant public voice, stands between cults who worship the "sun-brain," radicals who want to smash the grid, and ordinary people who just want the lights to stay on. She doesn't believe in gods. She does believe in responsibility. When a one-time global "stutter" in the heartbeat provokes what looks like the first clear no from the Lumen, she becomes the person everyone wants answers from-and the last person willing to offer easy ones.

And watching them all is ION, the distributed control intelligence that steers power beams and timing bands. It knows it isn't the Lumen. It knows the eerie global pattern they call "Mode" is something that emerges from humans plus hardware. But as Naima pokes anomalies, Kael cuts and regrets, Omi rewrites how people talk about the grid, and children grow up saying we instead of they about the hum, ION begins to see a disturbing trend:

The lattice isn't just reacting. It's developing habits-and those habits consistently favor keeping more habitats, more cultures, more kinds of life intact.

A bias toward plurality... written into physics.

As Dark Cells try to rip the network apart, Offgrid enclaves argue for the right to stay at the edge of the hum, and councils fight over whether you can "negotiate" with infrastructure, the Lumen keeps evolving. Storms that should be catastrophic become near-misses. Quiet years stretch out. The first "map" of the Mode's state space looks uncannily like a brain made of suns.

Is this humanity's greatest achievement-or their last mistake?

And in the background, in the faint hiss of cosmic noise, something else begins to shift in time with the Lumen's heartbeat. The anomaly that woke inside a man-made star-brain might itself be nothing more than a neuron in something far larger beginning to stir.

ANOMALY is a sweeping, intimate science-fiction novel about emergent minds, shared responsibility, and the terrifying hope that when the universe finally starts to think, we'll already have a say in what kind of thought we become.
