About the Book

The Eternal Buddha is the English rendering of Amriteya Buddha, the monumental Hindi epic composed by Ms. Savitri Devi, Sahitya Ratna. First published in 2003, the work stands as a rare synthesis-an artistic and spiritual effort to bring into one unified song the life, philosophy, and timeless mission of Lord Buddha. This epic is more than a biography. It is a bridge between traditions, a dialogue between Sanatan Dharma and Buddhism, and a lyrical retelling of the Buddha's journey that aspires to resonate not only with Indians but with seekers across the globe. Its translation into English ensures that this masterwork can reach readers from diverse cultures, carrying the fragrance of India's spiritual soil into a truly global setting. For ease of reading, the work is presented in four volumes, each standing on its own while forming part of the greater whole: Volume I - The Awakening of Compassion The story of Siddhartha begins with miracles and prophecy, a childhood of sheltered beauty, and a heart revealed in the tender tale of a wounded swan. Yet beyond palace walls lie truths his father sought to hide. Encounters with old age, disease, death, and a wandering ascetic pierce his innocence and awaken a deeper longing. Here begins the journey of a prince who sees that power cannot shield against suffering, and who dares to seek a path beyond birth and death. It is a story of innocence, wonder, and the first touch of truth. Volume II - The Path of Renunciation This volume tells of Siddhartha's great departure. In the stillness of night, leaving behind father, wife, and child, the prince renounces palace life for the forest. His wanderings take him to kings, sages, and years of austerity-until he discovers that neither indulgence nor self-denial leads to truth. A humble offering of milk-rice from Sujata becomes the turning point, revealing the Middle Path. It is the story of separation, sacrifice, and the birth of resolve-a seeker who abandons everything familiar to find the eternal. Volume III - The Light of Enlightenment Here unfolds the heart of the journey: Siddhartha's meditation beneath the Bodhi tree, his battle with Māra, and his awakening as the Buddha. From the stillness of dawn, his light spreads to disciples at Ṛiṣhipatan and through the first sermon at Sarnath, where the wheel of Dharma begins to turn. Returning to Kapilavastu, he reunites with Gopā and ordains his son Rāhula, extending the Sangha to family and foster-mother alike. This volume shines with the radiance of awakening, where personal liberation becomes universal teaching, wisdom shared, and compassion embracing the world. Volume IV - The Boundless Compassion The Buddha's message reaches across hearts and lands. From kings to courtesans, from outcasts to grieving mothers, each finds transformation in his presence. The dreaded bandit Angulimal lays down his sword; Krisha Gautami learns the truth of death; Amrapali, the famed dancer, bows before wisdom. Even cities rise and fall under the shadow of impermanence, while the Dharma endures. The journey ends in the Maha Parinirvana-the Buddha's serene passing, not as an end but as the flowering of eternal truth. It is the story of wisdom without boundaries, of love that redeems all, and of a light that does not fade with the body but lives on as the Eternal Buddha. Together, these four volumes form a sweeping narrative that is at once literary, philosophical, and devotional. The Eternal Buddha offers not merely a story of the past but a call to the present-a reminder that the Buddha's awakening is not confined to history but remains eternally alive, available to all who seek truth and compassion.
