About the Book

Late one sleepless night in Hyderabad, Dr. Manas Hegde-a neuropsychologist turned investigative writer-receives a chilling voicemail from an unknown caller: "If you can hear me, I'm alive... but not for long." The message is wrapped in static, untraceable, and timestamped only by a blinking screen. Haunted by past failures and driven by guilt, Manas begins decoding the audio, isolating spectral patterns and sub-audible rhythms. Beneath the whisper, he detects seven irregular pulses-signals that defy known cellular protocols. With help from Vikram, an engineer versed in telecom systems, Manas traces the signal to abandoned microwave stations on Hyderabad's outskirts. They uncover a ghost network-an illicit relay system broadcasting unregistered transmissions. A second voicemail reveals cryptic numbers linking to a dormant Hillcrest Biocorp account. Though publicly focused on hearing aids, Hillcrest is rumored to conduct neurological experiments. Manas suspects they've weaponized trauma. He enlists Aisha, a cyber-activist, to infiltrate Hillcrest's servers. Together they uncover "Project Echo"-a program converting therapy recordings into sonic triggers capable of inducing breakdowns and psychosis. The voice belongs to Ragini Verma, a test subject whose suffering is being looped and broadcast. Manas, haunted by memories of a patient he couldn't save, sees Ragini as both victim and symbol of systemic abuse. Seeking clarity, he turns to Sarika, a trusted neuro-nurse. She confirms the broadcasts cause psychological collapse. Victims spiral into catatonia; lab assistants lose grip on reality. Ragini's voice is not just a cry for help-it's a weaponized echo of pain. Manas's mission becomes urgent: rescue her before her agony is perfected. As his exposés gain traction, Manas is threatened by corporate agents and shadowed by intelligence units. Files vanish, calls are blocked. One night, a final message arrives: "I'm here... I can't escape." With Sarika, Vikram, and Aisha, Manas infiltrates a Hillcrest warehouse. Inside, they find servers pulsing with spectral feeds and Ragini's file marked "Extraction pending." Cornered, Manas hacks the transmitter and loops Ragini's raw message through the facility. Guards freeze, hypnotized. He pings her last known GPS and finds her strapped to a gurney. Whispering "You are safe," he frees her and escapes into the night. Weeks later, Manas publishes a damning exposé. Hillcrest's programs are shut down; survivors receive care. Ragini begins healing under Sarika's guidance. Manas retreats to academia, teaching ethics in neurotech. He reminds students that the human voice is sacred-capable of healing or harm-and that sometimes, silence is the most compassionate response. Phantom Frequency explores how trauma can be weaponized, how listening can be dangerous, and how empathy must guide technology. It's a story of redemption, resistance, and the fragile power of the human voice.
