About the Book

The Big Questions: What Is Symbiosis? is a beautifully written children's nonfiction picture book about symbiosis, biology, ecosystems, nature, the human body, interdependence, and the hidden relationships that make life possible.

Created for curious readers aged 5-12, this wonder-filled science book begins with a simple idea: symbiosis means living together in relationship. From bees and flowers to clownfish and sea anemones, from tree roots and fungi to the tiny helpers inside our bodies, children are invited to explore how living things meet, share, shelter, survive, and sometimes take from one another.

Hi, my name is Ethan Solace-an interdisciplinary psychologist and a dad. Picture books are often the first place children encounter the wider world, but we don't always stop to think about who wrote them, or the lasting impression they leave.

I wrote The Big Questions series to be premium, exciting, child-friendly, and based on how children actually engage, not talking down to them, but exploring with them. These books are designed to make big ideas feel alive through wonder, story, emotional intelligence, and clear understanding.

In What Is Symbiosis?, children discover that nature is not made from lonely, separate things. Life is full of relationships. Some help both sides, like flowers and bees. Some offer shelter, like clownfish and sea anemones. Some are hidden beneath the soil, where tree roots and fungi work quietly together. Some live inside us, in the tiny world of the microbiome. And some relationships, like parasites, remind us that nature is beautiful, but also honest and complicated.

This book introduces symbiosis as a real biological idea, then gently widens the conversation into interdependence: the way breath connects us to plants, the way bodies depend on tiny life, the way ecosystems hold living things together, and the way Earth itself exists through light, water, air, gravity, and time.

Inside, children will explore:

  • What symbiosis means in biology
  • How bees and flowers help each other
  • Why clownfish can live safely among sea anemones
  • How trees and fungi connect beneath the forest floor
  • What the microbiome is, and why tiny life inside the body matters
  • Why some relationships in nature are not fair, including parasites
  • How ecosystems depend on many living things working together
  • How breath, bodies, Earth, and the wider universe help us understand interdependence
  • Why life does not happen alone

Perfect for bedtime reading, classrooms, homeschool learning, science lessons, biology topics, nature studies, ecology discussions, and children who ask big questions about life, this book turns a complex scientific word into an unforgettable journey of discovery.

Written with warmth, clarity, and cinematic imagination, The Big Questions: What Is Symbiosis? helps children understand that science is not just about facts. It is about noticing the hidden connections that make the world alive.

For every child who has wondered how flowers, forests, oceans, bodies, planets, and stars fit together, this book offers a gentle and awe-filled answer.

Life is not made of lonely things.

It happens through relationship.
