About the Book

The water was low the morning they pulled Ana Vance out of the Marrow Falls reservoir, and Sheriff Wade Holt called it before the fog had even lifted: an accident, a girl who'd had too much to drink and lost her footing on the dock. Case closed by Friday.

Deputy Callan Reyes doesn't buy it. Not with the bruises on her forearms. Not with a sheriff who's never once rushed to judgment before deciding, on this particular morning, that speed matters more than the truth.

The county's medical examiner gives him ten days before the finding becomes official and unappealable. Ten days to prove that a nineteen-year-old scholarship student with two jobs and a spotless record was murdered, in a county that has spent two decades perfecting the art of not asking the questions it doesn't want answered.

What Callan finds, piece by piece, is a shell company. A ledger. A pattern of deaths going back further than anyone in Marrow Falls has ever been willing to admit, each one arriving at exactly the moment someone got too close to the money moving quietly beneath the county's surface. A judge. A banker. A contractor. A trooper two counties over. Ordinary people, each of them having made, at some point, the same small and reasonable-seeming exception that this town has always quietly demanded of the people who want to keep living in it.

And at the center of it, in handwriting Callan has known his whole life: his father's.

Del Reyes spent thirty years as the most trusted sheriff this county ever had. Somewhere in the slow wreckage of a dying mill town, he built something meant to keep the lights on a little longer than the town deserved -- and it quietly became something else entirely, a machine patient enough to survive two decades and desperate enough to have just killed a girl who never understood what she was carrying for it. Now Del is eighty-one, losing his mind a little more each week, and his son has ten days to decide whether uncovering the truth about Ana Vance means burying his own father to do it.

The Quiet County is a slow-burn small-town mystery about the difference between the mercies that keep a community alive and the ones that just feed whoever is already eating well enough -- and about what it finally costs a person to stop looking away. It is told through the eyes of a deputy who left for the Army and came home changed enough to see his own county clearly; the medical examiner who first laid a decade of death certificates beside a stranger's ledger and noticed they matched; the sister determined that her sister be remembered as a person rather than a case file; and the ordinary men and women -- a retired schoolteacher, a county clerk, a bartender, a nineteen-year-old firefighter -- who have spent years quietly keeping score of favors that were never supposed to add up to anything at all.

Marrow Falls has always known how to submerge what it cannot bear to look at directly. This is the story of the ten days that finally force it to stop.

For readers of quiet, character-driven crime fiction in the tradition of small-town noir: stories less concerned with whodunit than with what an entire community allows itself to become when survival and complicity start to look like the same thing, and what it takes for one person, finally, to refuse the difference. The Quiet County asks what a son owes the truth when the truth will cost him his father -- and what the living owe the dead when it would be so much easier to let them stay buried.
