About the Book

When Leaving No Longer Means Arrival

For all of human history, one rule of the world has never been questioned. When a person leaves one place, they arrive somewhere else. Every movement through space follows this simple and unquestioned logic. Doors connect rooms, corridors connect buildings, and roads connect cities. Civilization itself depends on the certainty that movement produces arrival. Architecture, transportation, and daily life are built on the assumption that crossing a boundary will always result in presence on the other side. That rule has never failed. Until the moment it does.

Inside an ordinary municipal planning office, a clerk walks down a familiar corridor carrying a routine folder of documents that must be returned to the archive. The hallway is quiet and unchanged, the fluorescent lights steady, and the door to the records room stands exactly where it has always been. Security cameras record his approach as he pushes the handle and steps through the doorway into the cooler air of the archive room. The door closes behind him with its usual mechanical precision. From every visible perspective, the moment appears completely ordinary.

But when the room is checked moments later, it is empty.

There is no sign of struggle, no disturbance in the rows of shelves, and no trace of a body inside the archive. The air has not shifted, the boxes remain undisturbed, and the floor shows no evidence that anyone arrived. Yet the camera footage clearly shows the man stepping through the doorway exactly as expected. The exit occurred. The arrival did not.

At first, investigators assume a technical explanation must exist. Engineers examine the door and confirm that every mechanical component is functioning perfectly. Security teams review the footage frame by frame, searching for any evidence of tampering or interruption. Architects analyze the building's structure, and environmental systems are checked for irregularities. Every test produces the same conclusion. Nothing is broken. Nothing has malfunctioned. The doorway works exactly as it always has.

The problem lies somewhere deeper.

As the investigation continues, a disturbing possibility begins to emerge. Human civilization has always assumed that space behaves predictably, that distance can be crossed without interruption, and that every exit must lead to an arrival. But what if that assumption has never truly been tested? What if the reliability of movement is not a law of reality, but simply a pattern that has never been challenged before?

The first disappearance raises a question no one has ever considered. If space itself can fail to deliver a person from one place to another, what happens to a world built entirely on movement?

As experts struggle to understand the phenomenon, subtle anomalies begin to appear. Distances feel slightly different. Boundaries behave in ways that cannot easily be explained. Architecture, once designed to guide human movement, begins to reveal hidden vulnerabilities in the assumptions that have supported civilization for centuries. What initially seemed like a single unexplained disappearance may be the first sign of something far larger.

Exit Zero is a thought-provoking work of speculative science fiction that explores the fragile foundations of space, movement, and human certainty. Combining philosophical inquiry with a deeply unsettling mystery, the novel examines what happens when the most basic rule of existence suddenly stops working. As investigators attempt to understand the first disappearance, they begin to uncover the terrifying implications of a world where leaving a place no longer guarantees arriving somewhere else.

The disappearance was only the beginning. Once the first exit failed, the system that governs space began to change. And if the world can no longer guarantee arrival, every doorway becomes a question that no one can answer.
