About the Book

"Is this the original floor?"

She said it the way she said everything when she was working alone, conversationally, as if the audience needed to follow her reasoning. She didn't expect an answer. She never expected an answer. She'd been talking to empty rooms for ten years, and the rooms had never once talked back.

The kitchen light flickered. Once.

"Were you the one who laid it?"

One flicker.

"Oh my God," she whispered through her fingers. "Oh my God, you're here. You've been here this whole time."

The kitchen light flickered three times. She didn't know what three meant yet. But it felt like agreement. It felt like: finally.

Ellie Marsh has lost everything. Her partner. Her job. Her grandmother. Armed with a redundancy payout and a desperate need to fix something that isn't herself, she buys a crumbling Victorian house at auction in a village she's driven through exactly once.

The house is worse than the photographs. The roof sags. The windows are broken. The garden has swallowed the path. But the bones are good, the original tiles are beautiful, and someone has scratched a name into the kitchen plaster: A. BOWEN, 1962.

Arthur Bowen was a carpenter who lived in this house for forty years, built the extension with his own hands, and died in his armchair on a Tuesday afternoon in November. He never left.

He communicates through the house itself. One flicker for yes. Two for no. Three for "come and talk to me." A warm draught when he's content. A slammed cupboard door when she reaches for the wrong wood filler. The smell of pipe tobacco when he's remembering his wife.

As Ellie restores the house room by room, she uncovers the story of Arthur and Dot, a love built in dovetail joints and Sunday mornings and forty years of quiet devotion, and a letter hidden inside a piece of handmade furniture that says everything Arthur could never say out loud.

Meanwhile, a property developer circles with increasingly generous offers. The village draws Ellie in with casseroles and shortbread and local history. A slow, steady romance builds with the man who runs the hardware shop, over lime mortar and brass door handles and evenings spent looking at tile samples.

And Arthur, who has been waiting decades for someone to hear him, finally has something to say.

The Flickering is a warm, atmospheric novel about grief, renovation, and the spaces we build between ourselves and the people we love. It is about a woman who learns that fixing a house and fixing yourself are not the same thing. And it is about a ghost who, when finally given the choice to leave, chooses to stay.

Because home was never about perfection. It was about choosing to be somewhere, and being chosen in return.
