About the Book

In 1953, a nineteen-year-old boy's world was dismantled when the draft board pulled him from his home in Dardanelle, Arkansas. He was removed from his sophomore year of college and hurled into the Korean War. Three years later, against every expectation he had carried into battle, he returned home alive. His hopes and prayers were that Connie, his first and only love, would still live in Dardanelle and would give him the opportunity to apologize for pushing her out of his life and listen as he explained his actions prior to leaving.
Connie is the only girl Logan had ever dated, the only one who had ever truly seen him. They had been girlfriend and boyfriend since the first grade, and he had loved her that long.
Before he left for Korea, he pushed her away with heartfelt honesty. He told her not to wait for him; he was convinced he wouldn't survive the war, and he was unwilling to bind her to a man who might return broken or not return at all. In his heart, he felt he was showing her how much he cared for her, and how strong his love for her was. Though he pushed her away prior to leaving for Korea, his mind kept her close and alive. In his mind and in his heart, he carried her with him through
every frozen night and every moment he thought might be his last.
When he finally returned home, he was discharged from the military and given a bus ticket home to Dardanelle. After arriving in Dardanelle, he prayed Connie would at least accept his apology for shutting her out prior to his departure, and hopefully, let him explain how she had helped him survive in Korea.
In Dardanelle, their first meeting was awkward, but slowly they mended their differences and resumed the lives they had known prior to the war.
Eventually, Connie asked him to move in with her. Something Logan had thought of more than she could know. However, Logan suffered from shell shock (now known as PTSD), and he wanted to overcome the psychological trauma before living with someone. Yet neither of them could have predicted Logan's future. The military was not through with Logan, and they expressed their interest in the offer which he received by USPS. Finally, he opened the letter and found an offer for a promotion to Gunnery Sergeant and a $100,000 reenlistment bonus for a six-year enlistment. It was life-changing money, the kind that could secure their future. After long talks and quiet nights weighing the cost, they agreed he should take it.
The Army sent him to Fort Sill, Oklahoma, for training on the new guided bombs. There he learned he would be running the center at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, after his training, where he and his team would train soldiers on the smart-bomb systems. When his training ended, he returned home on a thirty-day leave, and he and Connie used every moment to plan the wedding they had once only dared to imagine. They married during that leave and returned together to Fort Sill, where Logan taught and led the training center until 1968.
During 1968, North Vietnam gambled everything on striking South Vietnam and the American forces in multiple areas simultaneously, later called the siege of 1968. This siege sent Logan and his team to Vietnam to save a church in Hue and to destroy the Dragon's Jaw bridge in North Vietnam.
His One Love, His Last Mission is a must-read for all ages. It is a thrilling story based on the lives of two veteran soldiers, with just a touch of fiction.
