Does your Christian life feel like an exhausting uphill climb?
You read your Bible-sometimes. You pray-when you can find the time. You serve at church-because it's the right thing to do. You are trying to be the spouse, parent, friend, or leader you're supposed to be. But underneath it all, there's a nagging voice asking: Am I doing enough? Does God really love me?
You're carrying a 150-pound backpack filled with guilt, insecurity, and the relentless pressure to measure up. You experience stress when you should feel peace. Anxiety when you should feel security. Burnout when you should feel refreshed. Even good things like prayer, worship, and Bible reading can feel like an obligation instead of joyful. You keep striving and straining, intuitively knowing this doesn't work, yet you don't know a different way to live.
This is the destructive power of Performance-Based Thinking: believing your value and identity comes from what you do and what others think, rather than from who you are in Christ. From childhood, this message has been preached to you-from parents, school, friends, society, social media, and yes, even the church. You're constantly under a microscope to see if you measure up.
The good news is that the gospel has freed us from this type of thinking and living. But adjusting to this new reality is not easy. It requires re-thinking all the things we thought were true about us, our identity, and what it means to be a Christian.
