The 6th Grade Basic Skills Curriculum from Plain and Not So Plain Academy is designed to strengthen foundational academic skills while keeping learning calm, steady, and approachable. This course focuses on reinforcing reading, writing, and arithmetic in a way that builds confidence rather than pressure, helping students move forward with clarity and assurance.
Instead of overwhelming students with busywork or excessive repetition, this curriculum emphasizes intentional practice of core skills that matter most. Lessons are structured to be clear, manageable, and effective-allowing students to grow steadily while leaving room for real-life learning, hands-on projects, and personal interests.
The program is designed to cover approximately 37 weeks, with four days of worksheet-based learning and one flexible day dedicated to life skills, practical education, projects, and real-world experiences. This rhythm creates a complete 185-day school year while allowing families the freedom to adjust the pace as needed. Students complete four pages per day, making daily lessons consistent without feeling overwhelming.
This year also supports continued growth in reading through independent reading, read-alouds, or audiobooks. Vocabulary development, speed work, and light test preparation are included to help students strengthen comprehension, fluency, and confidence.
Parents are encouraged to slow down when needed, break lessons into smaller sections, and maintain a positive, encouraging atmosphere. Progress does not need to be rushed-steady, gentle learning often produces the strongest results.
This curriculum is ideal for families who value simplicity, flexibility, and meaningful learning, and who want a solid academic foundation without stress. An answer key is available separately on the blog for additional support.
